I spoke to the service manager at the local dealership this morning about this issue and he said almost all of the T31s they fitted with the genuine towbar had this misalignment issue and they just can't work it out.

He confirmed that the rear bumper support is removed when fitting the towbar in place but he reckons the misalignment happens because the rear bumper is being held in place by clips rather than bolts, therefore it is not allowing them to do any adjustments to compensate for the absent bumper support.

Re: T31 Tailgate Rubbing on rear bumper

Hi Guys,

Can those T31 owners (Paul and others) who had their rear bumper successfully re-aligned please send me a PM with the dealer details who has done this procedure?

The service manager I spoke to today looked at all service bulletins for the T31 and couldn't find anything to fix this fault and said the technicians didn't know how to fix it either.

I reckon it will be impossible align the rear bumper when the towbar is fitted as it only uses screws on the sides and relies on clips in the middle. With clips there isn't much room to align anything.

Re: T31 Tailgate Rubbing on rear bumper

Hi Jalal,

Spoke to service guy today while my car was in for it's 1000km checkup and talked about the bumper issue. I didn't ask them to take the bumper off but did ask while on the hoist if they could check to see if anything obvious might be fouling correct alignment.

He said he hadn't heard of the issue and hadn't had any customer complaints in the past regarding a bumper misalignment.

Interestingly while I was waiting I took a stroll around the dealers used car section and noticed a second hand Series 1 or 2 T31 with a Nissan tow bar fitted and it exhibited the bumper misalignment - in fact it was a bit more severe than mine....!!

Anyway service advised the chap who fits most of the tow bars is off sick but should be back next week and they will follow up with him. They indicated they are pretty confident that he would know how to fix it.

I don't expect them to fix it as I fitted the tow bar myself however if they (or anyone for that matter) can point me in the right direction to rectify I'd be grateful. It is a genuine parted fitted following the instructions after all!

We'll see....

Cheers emoticon
Paul.

Re:

Thanks Paul,

Please follow this up with your dealer and let us know if the towbar fitter can shed some light on this. At least the dealership I went to today admitted that the misalignment is common, but they had not been advised by Nissan Australia on how to fix it.

Re:

Hi,

Thanks for a most informative thread. I came across this issue with my T31 12 months ago and brought it the attention of my dealer. Visually, there can be no debate as the left side of my trim sits truly higher that the right. My dealer (Northern Nissan) agreed to refit under warranty back then and after works were completed, I was told this was the 'best' they could do, its angle had improved but not by much. He was scratching his head when I left. I've accepted until now, reading this I may go to another dealer and try again. Every T31 I pass on the road, I take a look and cant really tell...but with mine I know its misaligned and it annoys me no end.

Eddie, post a picture so we can see this angle.
The problems most people have is the bumper/tailgate gap between the left and right side.

Re:

Tony, it's the same thing as everyone else, the angle of how the bumper sits and/or aligns with the tailgate. The best they could do is reduce the gap to be 3mm difference between the left and right sides but they can't get it aligned by 100%.

That is the reason I didn't notice it on mine first, as it the misalignment wasn't that huge as reported previously in this thread (i.e. 6mm) but when I looked at it closely one day I realized it is also misaligned like every other T31 fitted with the Nissan towbar.

At least it's not something serious as the chassis cracking when under load like it was the case with the genuine Nissan towbar fitted to the T30 models. The product development and testing team in Nissan Australia have a lot to answer for when they approve locally manufactured accessories to be fitted to imported cars!

Hi, does anyone know if this issue affects after market Hayman Reese tow bars as well or just the genuine Nissan item?

Thanks

Marty

Re: T31 Tailgate Rubbing on rear bumper

Hi Jalalski,
I got my towbar fitted at Northside Nissan in Perth. When first put on, the bumper was badly misaligned that it was touching bottom right corner. I took it back and they aligned it just by shifting the bumper over. The gaps are alot better than it was, but not perfect it is still out. I am happy with it as it is not scraping anymore. They told me that, that was the best they can do. My father inlaw has just ordered a new x-trail from a different dealer and is getting a towbar fitted as part of the deal. It hasn't arrived yet, it will be interesting to see how they fit his. I have been checking out all the x-trails around and have only seen one that was perfect and that had NSW plates on it.

Thanks Paul

Re:

I since have noticed after the weekend my exy has bulged out near the rear latch resulting in my tail gate rubbing the paint off the rear door itself!

as you know mine is a Haymen and Reece set up so a bit puzzled on what I can do to rectify this!

Will get some pics as well!

Regards Scot
