Re: looking at a ti t30, what to look for
Mate, the QR25DE petrol engine is identical internally on the Series one and Series 2.
The difference being, another cat convertor has been added below the vehicle on a series 2. This has somewhat restricted the power output, when compared to a Series 1.
Things to check would be service history/ factory recalls completed/ state of oil and belts/ engine noises and rattles (compression check)/ tyres and brakes/ electronic functionality of abs, 4wd lock, auto engage etc.
Dont be scared by reports of failures, as every single mass-produced vehicle motor has its own problems.
Be aware of the butterfly valve screws and if you can, get them loctited (just a piece of mind thing for me, another bit of preventative maintenance),I would also recommend removing the factory engine mounted Cat and exhaust manifold to completely mitigate any future problems.
The QR25DE pulls the xtrail well, and should last a long time if oil changes, filters etc are serviced regularly.

Re: looking at a ti t30, what to look for
Hi Steve,
If you do a search on "buying second hand" or "buying used" x-trail, plenty of existing topics will come-up with very useful information contained in them on what to look out for when buying a used exy.
In regards to the butterfly screws, if my memory serves me right, the design of the screws and washers was changed in 2006, so it was no longer an issue after that year for the Series 2 T30. All previous years had the old style of screws and washers and for an added peace of mind, the butterfly screws would need to be inspected physically.

Re:
If you think it's the one and you don't feel like doing any mechanical inspections on it, go right a head.

Re:
hi,
i'm looking to get an exy as well, and have found this forum to be a gold mine of info. I've been doing alot of reading, especially into the butterfly screw issue. I've got a few questions as well but i figured I'd pop em in here instead of starting a new thread.
With regards to the butterfly screw issue, from what's been posted it was 'fixed' in 2006, but i'm guessing it's not all 2006 plated cars, it'd be after a certain date. Is there any way to tell if your car has the new screws or not without opening it up?
Are there any tell tale signs of a car that has dropped a screw through it?
The reason i ask is that there are a few sorta too good to be true xtrail adds, with all leather, low k's, sunroof etc just really really nice examples, but the prices seem abit too good to be true.
Also it doesn't help that my car budget is sort of at a weird point, and i don't know whether i should get an base model ST '06/'07 or a more optioned TI/TI-L '04/'05 with similar k's.
thanks in advance,
el
