Re: Replacement Tyres

Hi All,

After 60,000K my Dunlop ST-20's on my 2009 TS are about ready for replacement (probably 5,000km's left). I must admit I have been fairly happy with them (not that I have had any other tyes on this vehicle to compare to!). Interesting to hear other peoples views on them, I must admit my wife mainly drives the vehicle and she does take it pretty easy and do highway miles which may explain the higher milage than most have experienced.

After a day of reading I am still confused about what I should put on. The vehicle is used primarily as a commuter vehicle with the very occasional stint up a gravel road.

My main objectives with some new tyres will be to if possible gain more traction on wet Bitumen with no increase in noise or fuel economy. I would like if possible to stay with the 215/60R17's but would consider a slightly larger tyre.

My head says go with the Geolander H/T-S, however I have read some conflicting reviews on other boards regarding the OEM geolanders fitted to Forresters not being so good in the wet, however some suspect that the OEM Geolanders are not up to the usual retail tyre standard (not sure about all this).

My heart says go with the Geolander A/T-S mainly based on positive reviews on this forum as a tougher tyre that performs better in the bush can't be a bad thing if road performance is no compromised.

Question to those that have replaced OEM Dunlop ST-20's with Geolander A/T-S - Did you notice any increase in fuel consumption or road noise with the new tyres? Are the tyres as good as the Dunlops on the bitumen?

Question to those that have replaced OEM Dunlop ST-20's with Geolander H/T-S - How do the tyres handle in the wet? Are you happy that the tyres are a better option than the Dunlops?

Cheers

Hogie

Re: Replacement Tyres

Hi all,

Posted a while back about A/T's for 16" rims and without a lift kit decided to go with 225/70/16's. Tossed up between the Yoky's, Pirelli and Coopers AT's and finally decided on the Yoky's, especially considering the road hazard warranty. Getting them fitted next week at Bob Jane Bathurst for under $250 each, which was pretty good, it was their official opening day.

Will have about 4 weeks highway running before I head off for 2 months to Broome and back.

Will post my thoughts on how they go on the bitumen before I go and let you know how they handle the Strezlecki, Tanami and Gibb River roads when I get back.

don't forget your pressure gauge to let em down (or whatever means you use - count, thumb, kick, etc). A mate took his family Prado into the north west and the tyres came back looking like the sails of the Black Pearl!

I took mine to El Questro but they're not damaged in the slightest (visibly...)

No doubt you know, but worth mentioning to save those nice new tyres from an early demise!

Re: Replacement Tyres

Don't worry Iain got all the necessary gear.

Learnt our lesson a few years back when we forgot to let the tyres down on my mates Vitara while travelling through Arkeroola SA. Got onto the Maree road and with a bit of speed up shredded a tyre, although pretty sure the damage had been caused earlier.

Every dirt road we hit on our trips now we make sure we lower the tyre pressures and put them back up once we hit the black stuff.

Should be up your way about mid to late September for a couple of nights stop over in Darwin.

Re: Replacement Tyres

Hi guys,

Have had the Yoky A/T's on for about 2 weeks now, only on the blacktop so far, but must say I am pretty impressed. While they're not super quiet I don't think they're much louder, if at all, than the original Dunlops.

Will be hitting the dirt with them in just over a week, on the way to Broome, so will be interesting to see how they go.

Re: Replacement Tyres

Just thought i would post an update on my Cooper ATR's in (215/75/R15) sizing as they are nearing the end of their useable life. They were fitted way back in August 2007 and are coming up to the 65,000 kms travelled with around 1.5mm tread above the wear blocks.

The tyre life has been quite good and the fact that a rotation and alignment check every 10k has contributed to this. Grip in dry conditions both on and off road is adequate while in wet conditions a bit dissapointing. Noise levels are a bit more than i was expecting but not so bad that i wanted to change the tyres over before the end of their life.

So for a while iv'e been doing the tyres reserch thing again and decided to swap sizes to either 225/70R15 or go back to stock 215/70R15, both of which fall within the 15mm oversize limit. Have found many tyre shops will simply not fit tyres outside placard specs (outside of limits)due to Vicroads fining them for fitting incorrect tyre sizes.

With this in mind i have decided i will try the Yokohama Geolanders AT/S in stock size. Many reviews by other owners plus a recent tyre test against many brands helped my decision. I have been able to price them at $210 for the 215/70R15 size which is at least $25 cheaper per tyre than the coopers, so i'm hoping to enjoy the savings plus have a better handling and quieter set of tyres in a month or so. emoticon

Re: Replacement Tyres

Hi,

Just back from my Broome trip and no problems at all with the Yokies. (can't say the same about the MIL and ECU, but that's another story).

The Yokies travelled the Strezlecki, Oodnadatta and Old Ghan, as well as trips into Peake Ruins (SA), Palm Valley (NT) and Bungle Bungles (WA) without a problem. In all put over 10000k's on them and they're still looking near new, except for the dust!!

Unfortunately due to the MIL & ECU issue I didn't get to do the Tanami and Gibb River so that'll have to be another trip.

Considering some of the areas we went into without a lift kit the Exxy did very well clearance wise, but there's no doubt that a lift would have made things just that little bit easier.

Re: Replacement Tyres

Glad the tires held up Whip, sorry you had to deal with the other issues. Got any shots of the worst situations your rubber had to carry you through?

Trying to keep my comment relevant to this thread lol, but really I hope you're planning on putting up a trip report sometime? I'm very interested in taking the X-Trail into some of these areas at some stage!

Re: Replacement Tyres

Hi John,

Highly recommend the Yokohama's if you decide to go to some of the areas I went. My mate had a brand new (and I mean brand new only 1000ks on the clock) Prado which had Dunlop Grandtrek ATs standard and while he didn't have a problem with them they didn't seem to hold up nearly as well as the Yokies and were definitely showing more wear and tear.

In relation to a trip report I might just do that, but I haven't even starting trawling through the thousands (yes thousands) of photos yet to see what I actually have, so as to show some of the worst terrain we encountered.

Re: Replacement Tyres

Just had Cooper AT3s fitted to Phillipa's exy in 215/70R16, gives me an instant 30mm lift due to higher sidewalls and the change in size also makes the speedo more accurate. They'll get their test next weekend....
