Rear Wiper problem

Hi All

I have spent a heap of time trying to get my rear wiper working since it just stopped a few months ago on my 2002 X-Trail.
I have confirmed that the wiper is working on a external power supply when detached from the vehicle. I am thinking it is caused by a faulty earth somewhere. All other electrical bits which share a common earth (D53) are working. The rear washer function is still working.

I have 2 questions.

Firstly, I can't seem to find D53 earth point. There is a picture in the Service Manual CD I have but can't locate it on the rear tailgate. Can anyone give me some more guidance for its location?

Secondly, is it possible that the intermittent function can be causing the ON function to not work either?
Should I have any voltage across the intermittent wire going to the wiper motor?

Any help greatly appreciated!!

Cheers

Andy

Re: Rear Wiper problem

What model xtrail mate?
I had a fault in mine, purely caused by a slightly open circuit conector.
You have obviously already removed the wiper motor several times, just check that when the connectors are pushed back together, a test light will indicate power on each side of the connection. (Edit..the connectors in the rear of the vehicle, up inside the boot wall trims, and inside the boot door panel itself)
Run a trailing lead (just a long length of wire) from the battery negative to the boot space.....never get a better earth than that, and if that doesnt fix the apparent lack of earth, it will be something else

I dont think a failed intermittent circuit would cause complete loss of wiper function, if I recall correctly ours worked as normal, just not on intermittent.
Try sourcing a wiper stalk from a wreckers, and swap it out to see if it changes functionality (if you havent already)
Cheers

Re: Rear Wiper problem

Thanks Dave! I have a 2002 T30 ST model.

So you mean there is a LED light or similar which indicates power to the motor?

I have connected the earth of the motor directly to a nearby bolt on the chassis and this makes the wiper work with the car running. However I cannot turn it off from the stalk as I assume by doing this i bypass the stalk? I assume the stalk switches ground.

Maybe I need to get another stalk!

Cheers

Re: Rear Wiper problem

I have a slightly different problem with my rear wiper - it won't turn off.

It will only stop when I turn the ignition off.

Re: Rear Wiper problem

I am thinking more and more this is related to the stalk. Does anyone know how the stalk operates? Perhaps there is an earth wire broken in mine and Stephen's active wire is stuck on in some way??

Re:

Andy,

The wiper stalk is a simple push in type and it has contacts in it, so replacing it is as simple as un-clipping it from its holding position on the steering column. You can find the wiper stalk at the wreckers and since yours is an ST, you might as well get the wiper stalk from a Ti that has the intermittent speed adjustment of the front wipers and it would work perfectly on the ST as well emoticon

As to the rear wiper operating all the time and not turning off, I had this problem with an incorrect wiring of the towbar, it was an earthing issue. Any auto electrician can easily identify this fault and fix it.

Sorry for the delayed response Andy,

I just meant use an automotive test light for checking if power is available at the boot end of the wiring loom, and on each side of the connectors. I think (not 100 percent) that the stalk does contol the negative side of the circuit, so changing that out might be an option.

Hope this helps and you can get it sorted

Andy,

I think I still have my ST wiper stalk in the garage somewhere, so if you want I can send that to you and you can see if it helps solve the problem.

Re: Rear Wiper problem

Guys, I have fixed the problem this evening!! It turns out the earth wire from the motor was broken in the rubber boot that goes between the tailgate and the body of the car. Joined them together and works like a charm!!

I decided to get a Ti wiper stalk as well from the wreckers for the intermittent function as suggested by jalalski so turned out an extra bonus!

Thanks so much for the advice and especially jalalski for the offer of a loan wiper stalk. What a fantastic forum to be part of!

Cheers

Andy
