Re: Where do you take your dog? DIY Dog Ramp for Xtrail
Hi to All,
Since my post in this section back in April, I have looked at several ramps to allow our Solitaire to get in and out of the Xtrail. Found one or two but neither could be stored away when not used and at close to $400, couldn't see the value in it. The only way forward was to make one to fit and as she weighs 32kg, it needs to be strong. Another trip to Bunnings!
Here's what I got and the cost.
1800mm x 450mm x 18mm Laminated pine .............$29
100mm Parliment Hinges set of 2 Zenith..................$16
6 Carpet mats @$3 .................................................$18
30mm x 14g wood screw, button head teks 12mm $12
You need to start by cutting the timber down to 410mm x 1700. Once done, cut it into two 850mm lengths. Position one of the hinges so the its's middle is directly over the edge of the timber. Make sure you drill the timber first and use the 14 gauge screws instead of those that come with the hinges as they have considerably more bite. I used this type of hinge as it allows flush fitting and the two pieces of timber to butt together, holding the ramp extended. Once you have fitted the hinges to the first piece , butt the second piece of timber up to the first, and screw into place making sure you have pulled the hinge tight as possible to reduce any slack that they may have. Fold the two halves together and check that it is square, if not plane down to suit. Use a cut off wheel or hacksaw to cut off the excess of the screws. Fit the carpet by starting at the middle or hinge line and screw each piece to the board. Don't cut off the overhang but wrap it around and screw it from the underside. This will give protection for the end on the ground as well as protection for the rear deck of the Xtrail. The excess along the sides will required to be trimmed back to the timber with a sharp Stanley knife.
The under side showing the hinges.
Stored under the cargo floor in place of the Left Hand drawer
In place and ready. We found that with the tow bar in place, it is best to position it on the left side.

Re:
Nice job John.
A bit of marine carpet or non slip tape glued to the ramp will also stop the dogs slipping as they walk up and down it.
