Replacement Windscreen with sensors (T31 Series 3 & 4)

Hi everyone,

Just got my new X-trail last Wednesday and had 3 trouble free days of driving then...
Crack! A rock right into the drivers side of the windscreen.

I took it back to the dealer the same day to see what they could do.
They said come back on Monday and they would look after me.
So i did.
The crack was about 15cm by then.

On Monday they said they could do me a new windscreen for $165 installed.
I thought that wasn't too bad at all. So i left their dealership in a Nissan Micra loan car.
Later that day i got a call from the service department telling me that they were not able to replace the windscreen as it was one with rain sensors and there are none in the country. A new one would have to be ordered from Japan and would cost $600. So i immediately said order it.
When i got my x-trail back i found the crack had doubled in length. They obviously removed the window and then saw the sensors.
This morning i called Windscreens O'brien to see if they could source something sooner. They were not able to give me an answer as the database showed 2 types of windows but only the non rain sensing version in stock. I told them my price of $600 and they said they doubt they could come close to that.

Anyway i'm thinking what i might do is get that $165 windscreen from the dealer without the sensors and forget this feature until the window needs replacing again.

What do you guys think?

Thanks,

Pierre

Hi Pierre,

Don't you have windscreen insurance cover? Now that you told me this, I reckon this will be the first addition am gonna make to my insurance policy for the T31 Series 4 I am getting, as some insurance companies offer free windscreen replacement with no excess payable, which is exactly what is needed given the price tag of the windscreen with sensors.

I would have never guessed them to be so expensive and I don't think the insurance companies know that either emoticon

Given the fact that may have to wait quite a while for the windscreen to arrive from Japan (due to the tsunami impacts and the associated delays) I reckon you currently have no option but to go with the standard windscreen.

Hahha,

I wish i did have the windscreen cover. When i changed over my insurance the guy from NRMA was really pushing it. I was like "Nah, never had a crack in over 10 years of driving."
So ye i recommend getting it. I will upgrade mine after this. Though it's a little late for this incident.

So i will call the dealership and ask them for the standard install. Hopefully there won't be any problems with warning lights or anything saying "cannot detect rain sensors".

Will keep you updated.

Re: Replacement Windscreen with sensors (T31 Series 3 & 4)

So i have called the dealer to see if i can temporarily have a standard windscreen installed.
First answer is, "no".
Because the vehicle has rain sensing wipers that won't be functional, the vehicle will be deemed un-roadworthy, and we cannot do any un-roadyworthy work.

So i said, "isn't my car unroadworthy with a giant crack on the windshield that is growing by the day?, i have the car for 3 days then i can't drive it for 2 months because it is unroadworthy?"

So he passes me on to another service centre employee and he says there may be issues with the mirror attachment and all sorts of stuff. But he'll get back to me.

So at the moment i'm waiting for his call on what they can do.
I'm thinking my last resort is to ask O'briens to just stop the crack from spreading. They said the crack is too big for repair and needs replacement, but there are none in the country. So i will just have to explain my situation.

Never thought a tiny stone would cause such a big problem.

Re:

Hmmm, look forward to an update on this. Did they tell you where exactly the rain sensors are located on the windscreen?

Is the rear view mirror stuck to the windscreen? If that is the case, they gonna need to order a new base for it as the stuck base of the rear view mirror can not be re-used when pulled off.

That's the problem with new cars, they get them into the country without any stock of spare parts and hope that nothing happens for some months and when it does, huge waiting times happen because they need to order the parts from Japan/overseas.

Re: Replacement Windscreen with sensors (T31 Series 3 & 4)

Ok so got a call back from Nissan. They said they didn't want to put a standard screen on there because they really don't know how it will effect the rest of the car. Like with the sensors not working will there be a chain reaction of sorts causing other parts to not function properly.
I didn't ask them about the location of the sensors sorry Jalal but i didn't hear anymore about the mirror either. I think that was just something he said off the top of his head to stop me from pushing for a standard windscreen. I don't think there is any difference between the models and the mirror. ST and TI models for series 3 & 4, is there?

Anyway i was given an official quote to replace with the rain sensing version at about $1050. Which is a lot more than the phone quote i got yesterday of $600. So i will have to see if my mate that works there can do something with the price. I will have to just got through my insurance otherwise and cop the excess.

So i've decided to obviously order the new windscreen from Nissan and wait the 6-8weeks. In the meantime i have called Novus Auto Glass to see if they can stop the crack from getting any bigger. I'll know in a couple of hours when they come to have a look at the car whilst i'm here at work.

Re:

WOW, that price is a killer for sure!!

Yep, the rear view mirror is the same in all T31 models, but the rain sensors are only available on the Ti and TL Series 3 and 4.

I think am gonna insist on a "windscreen protection plan" of some sort to be provided by the dealer when I get the car. hahaha emoticon

Ah yes they can re use the mirror,

As in the case of mine they pulled it off the old windscreen and then took what they could of then went to the edge of the road and then scrapped the base until all stuff was of and then re glued it to the new windscreen.

Was thinking of trying to adapt the rain feature to my exy but that cost of replacing the windscreen just blew it!

Re: Replacement Windscreen with sensors (T31 Series 3 & 4)

I can't believe Nissan sell cars and don't have a stock of basic spares.

I'd be straight to Consumer Affairs.

I know all the "You have to wait for it to come from Japan". There should be a Law requiring Car Companies to stock complete sets of spares in the country they sell the cars in.

Waiting for spare parts weeks and months (worse now the Tsunami has decimated manufacturing) is simply not good enough and shows a lack of customer focus.

This could be a good issue for the Nissan Aus. Forum.

Re:

I thouht that the sensors were part of the rear view mirror, just as they are in the VW Golf. The onlu difference I can see in their screen is the blacked out section that goes around the square sensor itself.
I'll have to have a proper look at the TI X Trail next time at the dealers.
