New Series 3, rough running after start

My relatively new 4 months old (4100 km on the clock) has over the last couple of weeks developed a problem when starting.

When starting cold (yes its summer), often will not start first time, and if it does, will run really rough....on one or two cylinders for 20 sec or so then clear and run properly.

I have always, since new only filled the car with premium fuel.

Seems like fouled plugs... what worries me is why could they be possibly fouling on a new engine? Oil in cylinder?

The car is still under warranty and plan to take it in soon for a look.

Anyone got any other ideas as to the cause of the problem, as I fear they will either only clean or replace the plugs and not fix the cause.

Thanks Greg

Hi Greg,

Being a new car chances are one of spark plug coils has moisture in it and it could have been caused by Nissan washing the engine bay or spraying a cleaner as part of the pre-delivery detailing and inspection. You can remove and clean all of the coils and see if that helps solve the problem.

Re:

HI Greg,
On the rare odd occasion mine does this too.
Its self inflicted in my case.
When I prematurely release the key before the engine actually starts, the engine runs like a dog. I turn the key off and try to start again and it won't start.
Wait a few more seconds it will start, run roughly for a couple of seconds and then find its stability and everything is good. Its happened to me twice since having the Xy.
I think the timing stays advanced and won't retard when the engine kicks over.

I don't think it would be water as it would have happened long ago.

Re:

Thanks for the suggestions. The funny thing is that it has only just started doing this consistently over the last couple of weeks. I dont understand these new fangled computer engine electronics well enough, but do know they work a treat while all is good, but can stuff up easily and especially dont like water.

On second thoughts now, its probably an electronic problem. Tony, I trust your six stacker is stacking well?

Cheers Greg

There is a problem with exy to watch out for if you hope in the car and turn it on and move it just a slight back or forwards then turn the car off and leave it and when you come back the car is very hard to start and runs rough for awhile.

I did this 1 time to move the garden hose out from the wheel and it played up like all Hell the next morning!

Re:

Hi all

Took the exy in to the service center, they wanted it overnight as the problem was only on cold starts. They rang me late the next day and told me the problem was a cracked spark plug and the spark had been tracking externally on the porcelain. I said no problems, put a new plug in and I will drive it home....

Well, guess what...no plugs available. Then I mentioned that I could swing past the local petrol station and pick one up for them...well no, they are "special" plugs, have to order it in, 4 days to get here. Amazing.

We are not exactly in the bush here at one of the largest Nissan service centers in Sydney!!

Anyway, I would have not guessed a cracked plug as the problem.

To their credit they have given me a courtesy car for the 4 days. Pick up on Tuesday.

That is correct Greg. The T31 has the super special NGK spark plugs and only Nissan has them (see details HERE)

I am not surprised that they don't have stock of these park plugs, as they're the Platinum type and only need to be changed at the 100,000kms service and not that many T31s have hit the 100K mark as yet.

It's good that they have given you a courtesy car.

At least they found what your problem is Greg.
A bit of a bummer having to wait 4 days for it but hey, we are talking Nissan here.

Re: New Series 3, rough running after start

One would think being a large service centre, They could swap out a plug from one of the showroom units? But we are talking nissan...

Our dealer here in tassie came out to us on the road with a loan car and tilt tray to get Exy when a service went wrong (only got 10k's from the shop)

Hope it goes well. Did you get an Exy emoticon as a loan car or a Micra emoticon as we did?

Cheers
