Recently I've been hearing a cluck-cluck coming from my right-back wheel.
It reminded me of the sound the CV joint made on my old Golf made.
It is not consistent - sometimes I hear it going straight and sometimes in corners and sometimes it makes no sound at all.
My first guess was CV joints so I booked it in this morning, but the guy phoned back now stating that the CVs sounds fine but that the back wheel bearing seems to be worn and could cause the problem.
In my mind a worn wheel bearing would not make a cluck-cluck noise but more a rubbing noise.
Anyway - I told him to service all CV joints while he's got the car and that I will have the bearing checked out later (they don't do bearings).
I actually hope servicing the CVs will resolve the problem.

Re: CVs vs Bearings I agree with trikee - - sounds more like a whell bearing to me. I have had a similar noise on a previous car to what you describe, and it was a bearing. If the cage has broken up ( a common thing with bearing failure ), you will hear a clicking sound, and it will be inconsistant.
