Re:

Interesting, I wonder what I'm doing wrong in the process then as I've tried it 40+ times now and can't get it to occur.

When you first turn the key to the on position do you immediately count for 3 seconds - then press the accelerator rapidly (5 times in less than 5 seconds)

or do you turn the key to on - let the orange display go through it's checks (OIL GOOD etc) then count for 3 seconds?

Maybe it's the seconds part that I'm messing up - does it have to be precicesly 7 seconds - should I be using a stop watch?

Does leaving the car door open have an affect - or the AC on etc?

Any advice welcome!

Re:

Just follow the DIY guide and I'm pretty sure I did it first go just by counting the seconds in my head.
Might be easier if you have someone reading what to do next so you don't get too confused.
Start counting with the ignition in the on position.

Well I just heard from the garage that it was a blocked EGR valve which they have cleared and it's now ok - I'm going to search around to see if this is a typical issue - hopefully I don't have a lemon!

Re: Particulate filter error resulting in MIL light

I came accross an article in the editorial section of carsguide describing this problem. An owner had this issue arise 4- 5 times. Even with freeway work during week days and drives to country areas some weekends the car wouldn't complete the DPF burn. Each time a visit to a dealer was required to fix the problem (until it occured again).

I hope that Nissan can eliminate this problem for future upgrades, as published issues such as this will eventually hurt them.

Re: Particulate filter error resulting in MIL light

Hey there
This forum is I have to say brilliant and has alerted me to a few issues with my X-ie that I may have not picked up until it was too late. Thanks!
My DPF light came on about 3km after picking it up from the dealer after having it checked over for the "oil in the air filter" issue. I wondered at the time if my x-ie was just a plain lemon and was making decisions there on the spot how to offload it quickly. Couldn't believe that it should do this straight after being at a Nissan Dealer but I had read all about it on this thread on the forum so did what others suggested and just drove up the highway. I have decided to be a bit more careful with what I give my x-ie to drink now as it seems from the forum that BP tend to offer the best diesel quality so found a BP on the highway and went to fill up and after I pulled up at the bowser before shutting the engine off the DPF light went off. I wonder if it was a bit of not-so-good diesel fuel from my local Shell along with some slower city driving that contributed to the light coming on. Needless to say I will be giving my x-ie nothing but BP diesel now as recommended on here and it will get some more highway driving in the future.
I just hope that it will last me for years to come because I just love the car - its one of the best I've ever had.

Re: Particulate filter error resulting in MIL light

Steve,

I have a TS manual and I find that even when I'm predominantly city driving, as long as I can get it in a 70 zone once a week or so (it probably doesn't need it every week, but you just never know when it does need it) I can get the DPF regen cooking along okay. An interesting thing I've found with the manual is it doesn't always take a lot to get it to regen - and I could swear that it has kicked off in the past without exceeding the 67 km/h or whatever the minimum is speed is.

One thing that may be important is once the regen starts, to keep driving until it finishes. Maybe you have been having regens starting, but have been terminated too early.

Listen to your engine now and again, and watch your fuel usage. When a regen kicks off the engine changes sound to something similar to when its cold. Basically its doing the same thing - when its cold it runs rich to warm up, during a regen its running even more rich to burn off the soot. Learn that sound, and you'll hear it especially when accelerating during a regen. With careful listening you can even hear when the regen finishes - can't describe it, but there's a little change in the noise and then it goes quieter, ie. normal.

If you regularly reset your fuel usage then the regen will run rich enough to start changing the average consumption (so much for being efficient - regen blows efficiency out the exhaust).

Also I don't know if it happens with all the diesels, but if I do stop whilst a regen has been taking place, there can be a strong burning smell - to me it was sort of like burning plastic even.

Hi All

Having read this topic through I would like to share my sorry story.

Following a 30000km service the following occurred, DPF light on closely followed by the engine light and disabling of the cruise control (SET light blinking). This has never happened before and the vehicle gets regular long runs!
My local Nissan dealer had a look at the problem (via the console) and advised me to take the vehicle for a 30min run at 80km/h. This they assured me would burn out the DPF and reset the engine light, which would in turn reset the cruise control. Almost immediately after leaving the dealer (1km down the road) and prior to my long drive, the DPF went out. Even after the long run the engine light still shows as well as cruise control being disabled. Dealer now wants me to bring the vehicle in for a computer reset to turn off engine light and reset cruise control (at a cost of $125). Does this sound right to anyone? It seems to me that the dealer does not fully understand what is going on and is essentially telling me that the sequence of events had zero to do with the service, therefor I must pay.

Any ideas or advice greatly appreciated

Bryan

Hi macza, can you please comment further if your problem with the MIL light have been solved as I am having same kind of issue:

First the DPF light on, then the MIL, however after dealer has checked it over his portable "scanner" - the DPF light went off and MIL is still ON... the ECU reset hasn't helped either emoticon

I must apologise for this lapse! Have just posted at the Introduction section emoticon

Unfortunately the car still reports P1435 + DPF regeneration code and I am taking my Xtraily to the dealer for regeneration works - would charge $40 just for regen and additionally extra cash $145 for special Nissan Oil and Filter. I would have a think and would probably do the oil change with cheaper 3w-50 alternative.
