Re: Particulate filter error resulting in MIL light
I'm pretty sure now that my manual diesel is regenerating.
The fuel consumption slowly increases with the city driving, but then I notice that it starts to climb faster above 8l/100km. Although I haven't specifically picked up when it kicks in, I have become "aware" of it. At first I was a bit puzzled as to how my fuel burn rate could go up when cruising on the freeway in 6th. But then the next time I drive it the fuel use very noticeably goes down.
I have also noticed that the engine sound is a little different. It seems to have a slightly higher pitch - in fact could be a little "tinny". I need to have this happen a couple more times to correlate the tinny sound with the increased fuel use and suspected regen.
Some time ago I mentioned having my exy towed because of a burning smell coming from it. I've had that smell a couple more times now (my father confirmed one occasion) and it has always been from under the bonnet. The last assurance from the dealer mechanic that this was due to the brakes (huh?). However after this last suspected regen (nearly wrote degen), I picked up the smell again. Not as strong, but definitely there when I stopped the exy and got out. Followed my nose and smelt it strongest coming from the left side of the bonnet.
I need some more correlation to directly link them (versus coincidence), however I'm now wondering whether the heat generated in the DPF during regen is cooking something else. Are there any plastic (or other carbon based materials) anywhere near the DPF?

Re: Particulate filter error resulting in MIL light
Andy,
The smell could be the clutch as the gearbox is on the L/H side.

Re: Particulate filter error resulting in MIL light
Ooops Tony. I've got left and right a little confused here. If I take a moment to think its actually the right hand side of the vehicle. When writing I was thinking in context of facing the front of the vehicle.
Sorry for the confusion. Welcome to my usual state of mind...
It doesn't smell like a clutch to me. But one day if I have to ride the clutch a bit and I'll get to know the Exy clutch smell. But the current smell is nothing like what the subaru clutch put out.
If it was the clutch then I would be concerned - as it would be indicating that the clutch plate is not being allowed to fully engage and causing accelerated wear. Which would mean a fight on my hands getting Nissan to pay for its change. But anyways, I don't think its the clutch - but as I'm new to the vehicle anything is possible!
Next time I suspect a regen I'll check if I have a smell. Next time I get a smell I'll think back to see if I had a regen. Next time I do get the smell I'll pop the bonnet and see if my nose can lead me to it.
Another thing popped into my mind - last time I suspected a regen I felt more heat coming out of the bonnet on the right sidish region (ie not out the side, but around the bonnet itself i guess?) - but I'm grasping at straws for that one because I'm not sure if that was subjective based on the fact I could smell stuff. I think the turbo is on the right side isn't it? Hmmm... I don't think I have the ESM here at work. I'll have to work out what the DPF actually looks like so I can find it (I'm new to this stuff - but it has my curiosity - fortunately I'm not a cat).

Re: Particulate filter error resulting in MIL light
Good mornings,
I'm pretty sure i had another regen two days ago.
Managed to get a brief burst of speed on the drive in to work and at some point after that I became aware of a change in the sound of the engine. Sure enough, didn't take long for the fuel use indicator to start showing an increase above usual.
The regen kept going regardless of what speed I was doing. Even taking off from stationary the sound of the engine indicated that the regen was still happening.
So I extended the trip to work somewhat to give it plenty of time. The engine sound eventually changed back to normal so I drove into work.
I didn't pick up the strange smell - which makes me now wonder whether it happens when the regen is interrupted by me stopping in the middle of it... meaning maximum heat is still being produced right up to shut down. But won't know that one until I test it. Only conjecture for the moment.

Re: Particulate filter error resulting in MIL light
Good mornings smileys,
Quick update on the regens for my fellow dpf'ers.
I was able to test out my hypothesis that I was getting a bit of a smell if I shut down whilst a regen was in progress.
Yeps. It was smelly. Most conveniently the engine sound changed whilst on the way home one evening. It was still going - evident just as I was pulling in the driveway. So I shut down, hopped out, and didn't even need to get to the bonnet in order to detect it.
I think I'm on the way now to understanding this regen thingy.
