LSD

Hi all,
Acording to the spec my X-Trail has a LSD (I recon most of the models do have).

I was testing it the other day and got into a situation with one front and one back wheel spinning (typical case of cross-axel).

Anyway - what is the purpose of the LSD in a case like that?
Would it kick in after some time and give spinning back wheel some traction?
I also read somewhere (only afterwards) that you have to play with the handbreak of do leftfoot braking to get the LSD to fully do it's job.

Has anyone got the hang of the LSD in cross-axle situations?

Thanks
Pierre

Re: LSD

I would be interested to hear as well.
I got into a situation similar to yours, all I did was to floor it, to my surprise the engine didn't suddenly over rev, it just seemed to get grip without any wheel spin also there wasn't any sudden speed increase, just a smooth constant speed and off I went.

Peter.

Re: LSD

I believe that the T31 Xtrail has a BLSD, braked limited slip diff, so when one wheel starts to spin the traction control? applies braking force to the spinning wheel allowing the power to go to the wheel with most grip.
This would explain why when I was in a situation like yours and floored the accelerator there was no huge wheel spin and the engine didn't over rev, just started going again with smooth forward motion.

I'm sure someone else will confirm this or not.
Peter.

Re: LSD

The diffs on both the T30 and T31 are R145 AWD open centre diffs, there is no LSD involved at all. A wheel in the air offroad, will simply mean that ALL the power goes to that wheel.
Braked LSD uses the ABS sensor to sense wheel speed, and applies the brake of the wheel that is spinning to fast, putting power back into the wheel on the ground.
In a T30, applying either the handbrake, or left foot braking, will also simulate a brake LSD whilst offroad...
an LSD woul be nice, a Diff locker would be ideal, but unfortunately not available at this stage

Re: LSD

As Robbo said it is a T31 specification.

Nissan T31 Brake LSD

Have a look at this X-Trail BLSD video - You Tube to see the brake limited slip diff in action.

Rear mechanical LSD such as in the Jeep Cherokee XJ would not work in the XT, I don't think the AWD system would take too kindly to it. We have Lock which does lock the diff see this usefull link on the UK forum for details

Nissan All Mode AWD
