Re: Recall Catalytic Converter & O2 Sensor Breakage

Hi Dave,

Getting rid of the ceramic cat. converter is not an easy or cheap job, as the factory cat. converter is part of the manifold and in your case (2006 STS) you would have 2 of them.

I don't think it can be linked to the number of kms traveled as this recall happened to new xtrails at the time it was issued by Nissan. You can however start planning to do the exhaust upgrade when the factory warranty expires.

I'm afraid that my technical know how and abilities are restricted to say the least, hence all the questions.
I was hoping to do the Cat Back in the meantime, this doesn't involve the converters, nor void the Warranty as I understand it, correct? ...or not ;}

Edit ... sighhhh, I really wanted to do the full exhaust upgrade, though I did know I would have to wait 3 yrs when I organised the extended warranty.

How long after an Official Recall can you claim on it?

My 2005 84k klm Xtrail I believe (checked by Nissan....but they didn't say it should be replaced) still has the original cat convert.

Now I'm getting Crank Angle Sensor errors 1500klm after a service. Dont know the exact code just know the error message. Car cut out for a second then resumed. Keeps happening now.

Cant afford $400 to get it fixed...still paying the $1000 off for the 80k klm service + Butterfly screw loctiting.

Any way to check the CAS. Any wiring to check?

If Nissan checked your CAT and said it didn't need replacing, yours will be fine. However only a physical inspection of the internals of the CAT can confirm this.

The Crank Angle Sensor has nothing to do with this recall, all T30 models are suffering from the Crank Angle and Cam Sensor failures at the moment due to age and they can both be replaced by yourself. They come in a pack of 2 sensors when you buy them from Nissan. Please do a search on the Crank Angle and Cam Sensors and use the information in the existing threads (many of which have photos showing the replacement method).

Re:

Hi.

I have a 2004 TiL xtrail T30. its done about 123000km. about 3 years ago i had the butterfly issue and got it fixed via nissan after sending them pages from this forum and pictures as they wernt going to replace it as my car is out of warranty, i have also had the fuel recall letter and that got resolved. about 2 months ago i started to get a rattle coming form the engine and my oil pressure light flickered on a couple of times, i check the oil and it was dry so i topped up about 4L as soon as the oil was topped up the rattle went away. I checked my oil level again last week and its down to past L ( cold and level surface ). so in around 5 weeks iv gone through almost 4 L in oil and i have done 3000km. After trolling through this forum i found the link for the Catalytic Converter Breakage & O2 Sensor Boss Breakage recall and i havent receoved a letter from nissan, but i will go home and double check my VIN. if by chance my VIN is listed do i have any claim to get this fixed now since the recall was closed last year and my car is no longer in warranty. and also if the VIN is not listed and i am indeed having this same problem would i have to go through the lengthy process as i did for the butterfly issues with nissan eg. send them pics, this thread, info from mechanics do you thing i stand a chance to get my car fixed.

i have it booked in for a service next month hoping it will live to next month now.

Wow Aron, 2 posts in 4 years being a member of our forum!! emoticon

First of all, am not sure how an excessive oil consumption can be linked to the O2 sensor and cat. converter breakage recall as they're not related at all.

You said that Nissan fixed your butterfly screws problem but you didn't say how they fixed it, have they replaced the engine and gave you a brand new one or have they paid for the repair and recondition of your existing engine?

Re: Recall Catalytic Converter & O2 Sensor Breakage

A month or so ago I started noticing exhaust fumes in the cabin of my 2003 T30 XTrail. I finally got a chance to take it to an exhaust shop, and they pounced on the dodgy O2 Sensor welding. They fixed it for me while I waited ($60), and only now have I found it was the subject of a recall (http://www.recalls.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/954377).

This recall is also for the Catalytic Converter Breakage, and given the O2 fix wasn't done last time I had the car at a Nissan dealer I presume the cat converter wasn't either...

Anyone had any joy with dealers at this late stage? (note that the recalls.gov.au site clearly notes there is no expiration date on recalls, http://www.recalls.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/989294)

(aside: I've been taking the exy to a local mechanic for a few years now, but was getting it serviced by Nissan dealers for a few years, fat lot of good that was.)

Re: Recall Catalytic Converter & O2 Sensor Breakage

Ah, no I didn't mean to recover the $60, rather to get the cat converter work done.

... well bugger me, I was getting all peeved about the dealer not alerting me to the recall when I had it serviced, and lo and behold my car is just outside the recall VIN range.

Awfully fishy that my vehicle's O2 sensor boss failed as described in the recall.

How would I know if the cat converter was buggered?

Re:

Hopefully you will never have to find out if your cat. converter is buggered because it will be time to replace the engine if you do find out.

Signs of cat. converter breakage include loss of power and increased fuel consumption and the flakes from the cat converter will cause damage to the cylinder walls which can not be repaired, so it is indeed quite serious.
