Transmission Problem???
Hello All,
First time posting here, but have been using the forum for a while now when looking for DIY fixes/ x trail information...
I have a 2001 X-trail T30 ST, 225 xxx , it's been in our family for close to 20 years now and has always been very reliable. I drove up from Brisbane to the sunshine coast over the weekend and noticed when driving that I was feeling some resistance and thought I could hear a high pitch whine, but almost inaudible, but didn't think much of it. I got in the car later that day and couldn't shift out of park without using the shift lock button (small red button). I very tentatively drove it home and could really feel resistance this time and a buzzing noise was present.
Gear changes are still smooth, checked the transmission oil, which is fine, does not smell burnt or wasn't low, seems to be a couple of drops of fluid underneath on bottom of gearbox. perhaps the solenoid or brake switch (when depressing the pedal) has gone, hence why it wouldn't shift out of park ... there seems to be a lot of brake dust on the front rims, but there's a good chance I just hadn't noticed the build up (was thinking perhaps brake pad or calliper could be rubbing/seized?)
My guess is the gearbox is potentially on the way out, but thought I would reach out here and see if anyone else may have had a similar experience/issue?
Also, does the 1st gen have the CVT gearbox? will be booking it in with our family mechanic this week, so will post updates.

Re: Transmission Problem???
Hi Josh,
First off, the T30 does not have a CVT auto. These were only introduced with the T31 petrol models.
Secondly, if gear changes are smooth and the oil doesn't smell burnt I would guess the transmission is fine. How many kms has the Xtrail done ?
If you had to push the shift lock button, then it is very likely there is either an adjustment problem with your brake switch or it is intermittently faulty. Either way have it checked out.
When you say "resistance" was it a feeling of something holding the Xtrail from moving or a sluggishness of not wanting to move. The difference would be felt when coasting as a resistance would have it slow more than expected and not roll down a hill well where a sluggishness still would. Sluggishness could be attributed to the torque converter and resistance could be attributed to the brakes.

Re: Transmission Problem???
Okay, well thats good to know re: CVT. Thanks for that. The ol' Girl has done just over 225,000kms, regularly serviced since purchase.
When I say resistance, you could describe it as sluggish,, hard to explain, but like you've mentioned above, it seems to be when you take your foot off the accelerator feels like the car is wanting to slow down and when you can really hear the buzzing sound is present. Our family Mechanic is super busy this week, but he's going to take a quick diagnosis this afternoon. I will post later once I know more.

Re: Transmission Problem???
Thanks for the update.
Your description of the sound and effects I am sure will help others diagnose wheel bearing issues a little more easily.
It may still be worth getting the brake switch checked because of your trouble shifting out of Park without using the shift lock button.
