Re:

Oh wow. X-Citing news!

It's a good idea. You're right the CANBUS integration may cause big trouble if attempting to BLSD retrofit (but may not...) and this unit will perform better anyhow.

The reason ARB etc won't make one for us is they focus on the 4WD market and the basis of their solutions seems to be the EATON and LSD-type centres that are sold into the aftermarket for Hi-Po and serious off road vehicles with bigger drivetrains as they have a lot more torque (larger engines, low range gears) not to mention much heavier chassis' to move. The cores they adapt for these purposes are all too large to adapt to our smaller differentials, as you indicated earlier.

So you will be the first outside Russia perhaps, to do it which is another fantastic boon for the forum. And a credit to you for putting in the hard yakka and the hard yards making things work. 11/10- I hope it goes really well and can't wait to hear all about it!

Re: Rear Mechanical Diff Lock for Xtrail

Thanks.

Many years ago I went to an ARB seminar with a 4x4 club where they presented their air lockers. The presenter was one of the developers and told how in a rear-wheel drive Ford ute fitted with only a rear-wheel diff lock, climbed off-road hills which a normal 4WD couldn't with the normal open diffs.

I'm hoping the rear diff locker for the Xtrail will elevate its off-road ability by a similar amount.

Re:

It will, the rear diff lock is what made Land Cruiser and Hilux so capable. That said many Land Rovers managed with a centre lock only (front and rear locks were optional), which is great off road as there is no delay in addressing slip as happens with with slippery couplings. Without front or rear locks, the lockable centre diff ensures slip gets addressed by the other pair of wheels without any help from its opposing wheel, like it does in a factory X-Trail, but before the one with least traction has any time to lose traction and bog down. The way a locked system just pulls through is amazingly different to the path of a 4WD with LSDs (which is punctuated by flourishes of spin amidst lots more stops and starts, any one of which can result in getting stuck)

Transfer cases can need a lot of 'patience' to survive additional loading, but I don't think a problem for X-Trail's diff as it was designed to handle the rear axle loading all the time. A rear diff will ensure there is much better traction available.

It's not a Lada, after all: https://youtu.be/5-TgNzvuQso

Another link, slightly Outlandish since it relates to T31

(but with ESP off it should be the same as T30): https://youtu.be/Zafp2_IcgG0

Very good testing. If we do a similar video comparing T30 to T31 and/or X-Trail with and without an aftermarket rear lock, it would be popular. Or do one comparing 'Ye ol' T30 to the latest AI-controlled offerings from any manufacturer', I suspect the results would go viral in no time.

It has finally arrived.
Now just have to find a place to test it and take videos of the Xtrail without it stopped with opposite wheels spinning, then time to fit it and test in the same place again, hopefully with no slowing down due to wheel spin.

Wow. Can't wait to see that, and the device itself.

Given the torque split, a rear LSD could make it ride very smoothly in the rough.

Excuse my limited mechanical "know how" Kev but where does it fit and how is it activated? Is it T31 compatible?

cheers

Re: Rear Mechanical Diff Lock for Xtrail

Hi Dave,

It replaces the pinion gears in the rear differential and being a mechanical locker it is always active, unlike the air lockers or manual hob locks which need to be turned on and can leave you stuck if you forget to engage them.
As the T31 uses the same R145 diff as the T30 it is completely compatible
