Re: Rear Mechanical Diff Lock for Xtrail
Thanks.
Many years ago I went to an ARB seminar with a 4x4 club where they presented their air lockers. The presenter was one of the developers and told how in a rear-wheel drive Ford ute fitted with only a rear-wheel diff lock, climbed off-road hills which a normal 4WD couldn't with the normal open diffs.
I'm hoping the rear diff locker for the Xtrail will elevate its off-road ability by a similar amount.

Re:
It will, the rear diff lock is what made Land Cruiser and Hilux so capable. That said many Land Rovers managed with a centre lock only (front and rear locks were optional), which is great off road as there is no delay in addressing slip as happens with with slippery couplings. Without front or rear locks, the lockable centre diff ensures slip gets addressed by the other pair of wheels without any help from its opposing wheel, like it does in a factory X-Trail, but before the one with least traction has any time to lose traction and bog down. The way a locked system just pulls through is amazingly different to the path of a 4WD with LSDs (which is punctuated by flourishes of spin amidst lots more stops and starts, any one of which can result in getting stuck)
Transfer cases can need a lot of 'patience' to survive additional loading, but I don't think a problem for X-Trail's diff as it was designed to handle the rear axle loading all the time. A rear diff will ensure there is much better traction available.

Re: Rear Mechanical Diff Lock for Xtrail
Hi Dave,
It replaces the pinion gears in the rear differential and being a mechanical locker it is always active, unlike the air lockers or manual hob locks which need to be turned on and can leave you stuck if you forget to engage them.
As the T31 uses the same R145 diff as the T30 it is completely compatible
