What is this Part??

Hi, sorry for the basic question. I just bought a 2006 ST-S T30 and have been familiarizing myself with it. While under the car today checking out the source of an oil leak I noticed in another area what seems like transmission fluid around the black cover in the photo. I took the cover off and, thankfully, no gushing of any fluid, just some massive gear with teeth! It seems like some sort of breather cover?

Can anyone tell me what this black metal cover is for, and if it's "normal" for there to be a tiny bit of wetness from some fluid around the cover?

Apologies if this is a transmission part rather than an engine part....

Thanks!

Can you take a clearer picture from further away of exactly where the cover is for us ?

Here are two more photos from a bit further away. It's located near the centre of the engine. I've circled the part in the photo.

Thanks!

Re: What is this Part??

This is the cover to the flywheel. It is there so you can get to the 4 bolts on the flywheel which connect the torque converter, you need to remove these bolts if you need to take the motor out without the auto transmision.

If there is an oil leak from there it may be from your rear main oil seal which means you will need to take engine out to replace it.

Hope this helps.

The transmission can also leak fluid from this area. However, this oil looks dark. I wouldn't be worrying about it. Give it a wipe with a rag and keep an eye on it.

Re: What is this Part??

Ok cool. Thanks for the info and advice.

I was thinking of hitting the whole engine with de-greaser after I replace the oil sump gasket (which is where my main leak is at the moment). After that it'll be a lot easier to see what is a new leak and how worrisome.

Re: What is this Part??

There is no gasket on the oil sump, it is grey silicone and be careful removing the pan as it will be well stuck and you may bend the edges. Had great fun removing mine. It sound strange that you would have a leak from there anyway as the silicone is a pretty good sealer.

I suggest cleaning engine first and then see where it is from, it may be from the front crank oil seal, the oil it more likely running down on to the oil pan from there.

Best of luck.
