X trail newbie

Greetings all I’m a South African Kiwi reasonably recently arrived here on the Gold Coast. I’ve admired X trails since I saw the first ones in the early 2000’s in NZ. Finally got to a country with amazing weather and roads and was able to finally buy my X trail. I have a 2010 ST 4x4 with a manual gearbox. It is everything I hoped for and more...... I’ve replaced the bottom control arms, the brakes, front driveshafts and now I need a propellor shaft or tail shaft depending on how old you are. The mechanic is talking thousands I figure there must be second hand parts out there somewhere and would really appreciate some help. Thank you in advance.

Re:

Unless the mech has made a proper diagnosis, he will quote you more as it might be something other than what he suspects, so he may end up doing more than it might be.

Usually, things are simpler, so either a universal joint or a shaft support, and maybe it is worth doing some shaft seals when it is removed. These items are $10-$100 each, so unless the problem is really elsewhere, thousands does sound a lot.

If the problem is the uni joint, this is cheap and can be changed without re-balancing the shaft, which will cost quite a bit to do through a specialised shop. The only trouble for a normal mechanic is that not balancing the shaft doesn't always work out- and customers returning expect it fixed free. So they will always charge you to balance the shaft to insure themselves in case it needs to be.

Safest way is to find a specialist driveshaft shop that can remove, repair and balance on-site. They may offer to do it all on the spot for a reasonable price. Remember, they will only do the job if they balance it as having the machine there and not checking the shaft wouldn't make any sense.

To try for the cheapest way out, take it to an older guy that has been at it a while. Ask him if he'd mind diagnosing it, and if he agrees, give him the nice big coffee you just bought him. If he diagnoses the driveshaft, ask him if he'd mind doing the job without re-balancing it. So long as he marks it before tearing the shaft apart, and puts it back together with his marks aligned, it should not be too far out of balance. BUT; there are no guarantees, so you are taking the risk for him. He'll charge you to take it back in order to resolve any vibration problems later.

Oh, be sure to put a post on the forum under the correct section, maybe someone will tell you about the driveline troubles you can expect with a manual T31, especially if you clearly describe its noises and other symptoms :-)
