T31 engine rattle/vibration sound

Hi All
I have a 2007 T31 Xtrail Petrol.
Recently the car developed a rattle which I initially thought was just some loose metal vibrating against each other. A mate of mine said to check the engine oil leavel just in case and that’s when I realised engine oil level was very low. The dip stick is still touching oil but only around the tip.

I have since done a service. But the rattle or vibration sound is still there, just not as loud as compared to before the service.

This sound only happens at cold start and only goes for around 1min or until rpm drops to idle

Any subsequent startups while engine is hot or warm and there’s no sound.

Just wanted to see if anyone has experienced this issue and might know what the cause of this might be. Is my engine knackered?

https://youtu.be/l5OukwxTBKA

All inputs appreciated

Thank you

Re: T31 engine rattle/vibration sound

No I don't think the engine is "knackered".
The QR25DE uses a tensioner to keep the timing chain taught. This tensioner uses an internal spring for startup until oil pressure is sufficient to hold the tensioner.

As the engine gets older there is a risk that the spring in the tensioner might break or loose tension and as the timing chain gets older it might "stretch" through the links wearing and this stretch means the tensioner spring might not tension the timing chain as much as it should during startup until the oil pressure takes over.

As our engines age it is wise to use a heavier oil to maintain pressure, particularly 10W40.
If the rattle becomes prolonged after initial startup you might see to having the tensioner either replaced or cleaned to make sure the spring is still in working order.

Re:

+1 @revhead Kev, it is not knackered :-)

The video doesn't help to isolate where the noise is being generated. You should check under the car- often the exhaust will make noise (if corroded or damaged), and as it heats up the noise will change, begin, or go away like yours is.

If it is coming from the engine, use a stethoscope, a screwdriver, or just your own ears to find the location. That will help you to narrow down the possibilities much more accurately. Feel free to share more with us, we'll try to help where we can

Thanks guys. very much appreciated.

There is now a new sound after the rattle sound settles down - squeaky noises
Not sure but i think its coming from the belt area - would these two issues be related?
Half way through the video and towards the end you will start to hear those squeaky sounds

Re: T31 engine rattle/vibration sound

Try something for me ...
Before you start the Xtrail, push and hold the accelerator to the floor as you try to start the engine. It should not start but just crank over. Then after your oil light goes out, stop cranking the engine, release the accelerator and try to start the engine normally.

I found this in an overseas forum where they also have occasional chain rattle on startup of their QR25DE engines and what it does is prime the timing chain tensioner with oil pressure instead of relying on the internal spring at startup.

If this cures your chain rattle on startup then you might consider having the tensioner serviced or replaced as the spring might be broken or gunked up and not extending enough.

Re: T31 engine rattle/vibration sound

Hi Kev

Just tried it
- floor the accelerator
- stick key in and crank start the car

Instead of the engine cranking like theres no petrol, the car started immediately and the revs shot up to redline. That was unexpected haha

Tried this method too:
- stick the key in and turn to "ON"
- floor and hold the accelerator
- crank start the car

The car still started normally, but i let go of the accelerator this time much earlier.
