Towing 30year old 1100kg Roadztar caravan

Hello again from Jimbr.
We have just bought this 07, 2.5 litre petrol X-TRAIL. ST. S T30 series with 170,000 k's on it and would appreciate a few tips.
Towing 30 year old Roadstar 16 foot 1120kG van. It is an 4 speed auto. Would you suggest leaving it in D with the overdrive switched in or would you leave it out so it is in 3rd gear 1-1 drive ratio?
Do you tow with the FWD selector switch in the auto position or in 2WD position. I am thinking the auto position would be best., especially if the road is wet. We were towing the van with our 2.4 litre Hyundai Sonata. It towed it very well however being front wheel drive lost traction very easily when taking off at traffic lights on a wet road with an uphill gradient or getting out of a campsite with a gravel incline onto the road.
Do you think this will meet our requirements?
Kind Regards Jimbr.

The T30 has a towing capacity of 2000kg with a braked trailer/van so it is more than capable of towing yours.

Leaving the transmission in Auto would certainly not be incorrect as the electronic controls will distribute drive between front and rear depending on traction requirements, especially in wet weather.

One of the main things to consider is the towball down force, making sure it is lighter than 200kg. This makes sure too much weight is not lifted off the front wheels and helps with traction.
