T31 Broken rear window defogger switch

The rear defogger switch is broken on my T31. The control panel is an older style rotary dial:

Given those two wires coming out the back of the unit in addition to the plug I'm unsure whether it's within my abilities to replace the whole unit, or whether it's possible to just wire in a separate defogger switch.

I haven't had any luck finding a service manual which shows how to replace this particular kind of unit. Can anyone help?

Re:

first ... are you 100% certain its the switch that is at fault? ... has it physically fallen apart? .. or can you feel that it is goosed? ...dunno exactly what failure symptoms you have ..you don't say.

Im sure that removing the manual aircon controller like you have won't be too much different to removing the climate ones .... albeit with the addition of a couple of Bowden cables perhaps. (are these what you are referring to as 'wires'?). Im guessing the manual aircon uses this manual method to move the doors rather than stepper motors. Pull off the centre fascia trim piece from the bottom with both hands. If you are unfamilar with this...look at the stereo/ head unit threads for details & pics.

Once that trim is off it will likely be obvious how to remove the aircon controller.

Re: T31 Broken rear window defogger switch

I had NRMA check when it was serviced and they were sure it was the switch. They quoted $700 for a new controller from Nissan which prompted a lot of laughter all round.

By wires I guess it's the Bowden cables I'm referring to. I'm not sure how to get into wherever the hell they run to in order to replace the unit. From the picture of the part it looks like they originate from the controller unit otherwise the part would ship without them.

If I had a service manual I could figure out whether its worth attempting myself, or alternatively locate the correct wires to splice an external switch into. I'm off to the snow this weekend and don't like the idea of not being able to melt the frost off the rear window.
