For anyone else who happens across this thread, the valve clearances are adjusted by ordering different buckets. There is a stamp number on the inside of the bucket which denotes the thickness of it in mm (x100) so a stamp 696 indicated a bucket with 6.96mm thickness. The service manual has details on how to determine the correct lifter bucket for valve clearance.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Revhead Kev)Fri, 02 Oct 2020 23:50:41 +0000 Re: P0350 DTC and rough idlehttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2098000,from=rss#post2098000https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2098000,from=rss#post2098000So I fixed this a long time ago and moved on but I thought I'd better let you all know what was wrong and how I fixed it. Pretty simple in the end realy, turns out the head guy seated the valves but because I didnt give him the lifter buckets the valve clearances were all stuffed. So I got the smallest measuring bucket and fitted it to each valve and took a measurement and then ground each bucket to fit. Bit of a pain of an engine to not have any adjustment there but thats the future of disposable cars. To do it properly you also need to be able to visualise the crank sprocket to align the bottom coloured link and mating mark at the same time as the top cam sprockets.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Revhead Kev)Wed, 27 Mar 2019 08:32:57 +0000 Re: P0350 DTC and rough idlehttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2096601,from=rss#post2096601https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2096601,from=rss#post2096601Time for me to get this fixed and off my driveway. Does anyone have a photo or image of the correct alignment of the cam sprockets when at TDC, the shop manual is not helpful to show exact alignment marks relative to the head. Best way I can see is to measure between links on a new chain and compare to yours. One clue would be if there was a loss of power and increase in fuel usage before the gasket was done. If not, then it might only be the reduction of the head when machined causing the slack and this can be rectified with a thicker multi-layer metal gasket.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Revhead Kev)Sat, 09 Mar 2019 13:36:53 +0000 Re: P0350 DTC and rough idlehttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2096557,from=rss#post2096557https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2096557,from=rss#post2096557Hi Revhead Kev, Thanks for your suggestion, I didn't think too much of it when removing and putting back the timing chain and just put it back where it was. I put some paint on the gears and chain to make sure they went on right, but right may have been wrong if it had already skipped a cog. How can I check the alignment of the gears if the chain has stretched? all the info I can find only references coloured marks on the chain and so will be of no use if the chain is stretched. How can I measure the chain to see if it is stretched? This happens because the links wear and the interlink spacing increases which makes the cam timing retarded in relation to the crank timing. It may also be a skipped link on one of the cam sprockets. You mentioned replacing the head gasket and having the head refurbished. One important thing to know about our Xtrails is that the chain is a fixed length and the tensioner can only take up a maximum amount of slack. After this the chain is too loose and can either skip a link on the cam sprockets causing timing issues or just have the cams slightly out of time with the crank. First suggestion is to check the position of the timing chain to make sure the cam sprocket marks are ligned up correctly with the crank. Second suggestion is to use a thick multi-layer head gasket. That will take up the slack in the timing chain caused by milling the head.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Revhead Kev)Thu, 07 Mar 2019 16:26:16 +0000 P0350 DTC and rough idlehttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2096555,from=rss#post2096555https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2096555,from=rss#post2096555Hi Everyone, I am fixing an Xtrail 2002 T30 2.5L petrol for a friend. I had a blown head gasket and that has been completely repaired and the head fully refurbished by a shop. It now has a P0350 code when I read it with my scanner and also has high long term fuel trim. It starts and runs fine but idles rough and seems low on power (I'm not too sure how much power it should have not being the owner of an Xtrail) I was apparently running rough before the head gasket problem. I have tried a set of coil packs from another friend with a good running Xtrail. I cant see or hear any air leaks in the inlet. Can anyone suggest what to test or try next?
