So, I’ll appreciate your advice. I have only one cable going to the grey connector M33 on the car side of the spring cable. There is also only one cable coming out from the airbag side of the connector M352 (pictured below), which is hooked to the bare metal of the steering wheel, so I assume this is ground. Do I have to route only two cables between the grey connector M33 (pins 6 and 16) to my Android head unit? Do I need to connect anything else? Originally the car came without the steering wheel controls and cruise control. nondisclosed_email@example.com (nikolav)Mon, 31 May 2021 13:16:47 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2096544,from=rss#post2096544https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2096544,from=rss#post2096544Great work!! And amazingly decent pricing. If however, you have a factory unit still..then it's likely to be more critical that you get the correct option. By that I mean the right wiring with the right buttons for your model of audio/ satnav etc. As I said earlier..if you google T31 steering wheel images... there are at least 3 different versions of the LH audio panel ... with a different number of buttons and different legends/uses. In the case of a factory head unit I guess there is no possibility of 'learning' ..it has to just work by plugging in.. So total cost for me was $84 US. Thats $67 + $17 shipping I think... EMS Express to Phils .. took about 1 week. The installation took me a day all told from start to finish .. but plenty of breaks during - lunch n stuff ..and taking my time. If I did another it would be an afternoons work..4hrs or so. A little bonus is that you do get a nice brand new cruise panel in the deal ... the whole steering wheel looks much nicer now. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Bertoknee)Thu, 31 Jan 2019 17:02:55 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2096484,from=rss#post2096484https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2096484,from=rss#post2096484... now we can populate that grey plug. Need to suss out a colour code yourself ... remember it before routeing the wires behind the dash. Pic shows the now fully populated plug...the original 4 wires..plus the 4 new ones I just inserted, thats 3 for the new audio controls..and the +12v feed for illumination which now has a proper crimp instead of just being a lash-up.. I have an aftermarket Android head unit so it was easy to connect up the relevant wires at the back. I only needed to connect the 2 actual control lines normally marked Steering A & B.. the ground wasnt required ..I guess it must find its way there via the chassis. And thats it ... I then went to the learning screen on my head unit..and 'taught' it which button did what .. took about 30secs..easy. I presume other aftermarket units will have alternative screens/ processes. ..and that is that ... wheel before.. wheel after... much better..a more balanced look and much more useful to me ... nondisclosed_email@example.com (Bertoknee)Thu, 31 Jan 2019 16:49:22 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2096483,from=rss#post2096483https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2096483,from=rss#post2096483..remember, the new part that comes from Nissan includes BOTH panels.... not just the audio panel for the LHS. Which means that this original stuff in my footwell..is now entirely surplus! and..as luck would have it ... the 4 crimps on this now unused original cruise panel ... are the same crimps that we need for the car side of the clock spring ...to fully populate that grey plug above!! ..nice eh! That is kinda logical tho ... its either side of the same clock spring assy..so makes sense they would use the same crimps. its dead easy to remove the crimps from the moulded plug ..look carefully and you will figure it out. Its a nice design. Leave a couple of inches on each wire and cut off. Obviously this means your original panel is no longer useable without refitting crimps but ... really, not worth keeping ..and not particularly saleable either. Extend the crimped tails with some suitable gauge wires .. I used a pair of twin speaker wire ..the cheap stuff that comes with most aftermarket car speakers these days. Need about 18" to reach behind the head unit area. Obviously insulate properly with heatshrink, sleeving, tape..whatever you have available. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Bertoknee)Thu, 31 Jan 2019 15:46:38 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2096482,from=rss#post2096482https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2096482,from=rss#post2096482..hi Kev ... well, as it happens...I may have some good news for you regarding those crimps. I completed the mod this morning and its all working great. Read on.. pic shows the 2 new panels fitted to the airbag assy ..with the new loom routed and ready for plugging into the clock spring... this is the good bit ... people who have done the steering wheel illumination mod will recognise this grey plug under the steering column ..this is the plug we will fully populate with the new control wires to the audio head unit. Obviously, the yellow side is airbag stuff..so leave it alone. more to come..nondisclosed_email@example.com (Bertoknee)Thu, 31 Jan 2019 15:33:45 +0000 Re: T31 - Fitting steering wheel controlshttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2096481,from=rss#post2096481https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2096481,from=rss#post2096481I've been thinking of doing the same mod to my T30 and add the LHS volume controls, but finding the correct terminals for the fixed side wiring of the clock-spring plug is not proving easy. If you find the correct ones for yout T31 I'd like to know as your plug seems very similar to my T30 plug.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Revhead Kev)Thu, 31 Jan 2019 09:54:22 +0000 T31 - Fitting steering wheel controlshttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2096479,from=rss#post2096479https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2096479,from=rss#post2096479My X Trail only came with RHS steering wheel buttons for cruise control .. but not the audio side. For me, audio controls would be far more useful than cruise buttons .. I seldom get chance to use cruise control anyway. So, I have always thought about retro fitting the LHS audio controls if it was possible. When I was doing the steering wheel illumination mod a few months ago I noticed the clock spring was fully populated ... meaning 8 passes..with only 4 of them used for my horn & cruise buttons (5 used after the illumination mod). So I figured..if I could get the steering wheel panel then I could fit the LHS audio controls to my steering wheel pretty easily. A quick look on Amayama and it seems Nissan dont identify each panel very easily .... but there are 4 possible combinations. Remarkably tho... each of the 4 options was only about US$60! ... which seems incredibly cheap - remember..this is the same company that prices a radiator at US$550!! ... weird. so.. I dug into the steering wheel..see if the parts on my current cruise switch panel had any part no.s to help. A pair of small Torx security bolts, 1 either side of the steering wheel hold the airbag/switch assy onto the wheel ..dead easy to get it off. Importantly the airbag stays connected so I didnt disconnect the battery... if you're not happy doing this..then I suggest disconnecting battery and waiting the usual 5 mins before attempting this. you can see the grey sleeving with yellow plug..this is the airbag.. so leave it be. The black sleeving contains the wiring from my cruise buttons to the clock spring. You can also see there are 4 passes unpopulated which I was guessing ..are probably used for the LHS audio controls. Its very easy to remove each panel from the airbag assy. A couple of small phillips screws and plastic clips and it comes away. Sadly...there were no part nos. on either panel on my steering wheel.... In the end I decided to order the one that listed the most options ..which was of course the most expensive...but still only US$67 ... bit of a gamble totally..but for that money I figured..worst case I would get a new one of what I had already .. Anyway ... box arrived from Amayama this morning .. some light relief from my current cooling system hassles!! ...I could tell immediately that things looked good .. .. and sure enough... ..both panels..connected together with a single plug to slot into the clock spring.. YOU BEAUTY!! The steering wheel side of this mod...is Pay..then Plug n Play!! so..I'm guessing that the cheapest option on epc will be just the cruise panel..and a LH blank panel... like what I have now. The other 2 options are probably the slightly different arrangement of audio controls. If you google T31 steering wheel images, you can see that there are 3 different layouts of buttons on the audio panel. Its not important to me ..all I really wanted was volume and source ...if I can program anything else... like mute, call..and menu..then it will be a bonus .. The car side of things should be super easy ... the schematic is below. X Trail uses the (almost!) industry standard system of a common plus 2 wires. Easy to connect these 3 wires from car side of the clock spring (where the illumination mod was done) to the rear of whatever audio unit you have. There is no huge current on these ..so some thin flexible 3 core will do. I'm trying to identify the correct molex type crimps for the clock spring plug so I can do the job neatly ..until then I'm just gonna do it like the illumination mod. More to follow.... nondisclosed_email@example.com (Bertoknee)Tue, 29 Jan 2019 16:53:56 +0000
