posticon EGR valve clean

Hi all,

I realise there are a heap of EGR valve threads already on here but I just wanted to see if anyone had any ideas on my situation.

I pulled my EGR valve off today for a clean as the MIL with codes P0487 and P0488 had been on for quite a while (I'd had discussion with mechanics about it including Nissan but never actually got to the point of doing something about it until I discovered this forum - thanks to all for the input over the years!).

When I pulled the valve off it was, as predicted, filthy. I was expecting to see lots of sticky soot however what I found was a whole heap of green/brown gunk that looked the consistency of bearing grease.

Does anyone have any ideas what could cause this? I thought it could be the fact that the EGR valve has been stuck for quite a while, or something more sinister?

I cleaned the valve and code P0487 came back almost straight away so I'm going to start fault finding from from the manual. Hopefully the EGR valve isn't totally cactus. If anyone has any ideas of a good place to start fault finding that would also be awesome!

Thanks in advance.

Re: EGR valve clean

The P0487 code is something wrong with the signal circuit of the egr valve control.
Check that you have plugged it back in properly and that there are no frayed or brocken wires.

Re:

Thanks Kev, yes next step is to check earth connections, shorts etc.

I have to say, I hate car electrical issues. I used to be an electrical engineer so know a thing or two about electronics but am usually confounded by cars, with useless wiring diagrams and no labels on any wiring.

Is there an easy way to find out which connector is which? For instance, "Check ground connection E17". I see a rough sketch in the manual showing me where in the engine bay to look, but how do I actually identify which one is E17?

Similarly, I need to check continuity between connectors F99 and F68. I assume that F99 is the EGR valve connector and it seems F68 is one of the power supplies from the ECM. Is there a way to easily determine which connector is which without any guesswork?

Re: EGR valve clean

The diagrams in the ESM are all there is.

For the locations of the earthing connections, try to picture the other items in the diagram such as battery, manifold, fluid reserviors, etc to get a better idea of the exact location.

For the connectors, under the wiring schematic showing connections and colours there should be diagrams of connector shapes with pin numbers and positions. These will help you find the correct shaped connector along with the colour shown as white, grey, brown etc.
For any connector not on an actual piece of equipment, there are connector location diagrams on other pages showing the body outline to help find where they are.

(I'm also an electrical engineer who knows about electronics) emoticon

Thanks Kev, wish me luck.

If the worst case eventuates - EGR valve has failed, are you aware of anyone sourcing a new valve and installing themselves? Along with the position learning procedure? I haven't found any mention of it on this forum.

Re: EGR valve clean

No one has mentioned anything about EGR valve position learning when they have removed and cleaned theirs. I would suggest looking in the ESM to see if anything is mentioned in that and if not then it would be safe to say it doesn't need it.
