posticon Changing CVT oil - Saving lots of money

I changed the CVT oil in my T31 Xtrail.
@ 78000 Kms . The CVT oil was replaced 3 times . The car was driven between the transmission oil changes so that it has new fluid all through the gearbox.
I used Penrite CVT V oil rated for NS -2
The car now has 105000 Kms . The transmission is running without any problems!!!!!!
Now driven 27000 Kms with no issues

The Penrite CVT V costs about $50 per 4 litres as compared with approximately $130 for 4 litres . An extra $80 per 4 litres .

From my reasearch for our Swift with a CVT, and the problems we experienced, just steer clear of Castrol Gold CVT fluid, and make sure you get the 'new' formulation of the Penrite.

Thanks for your post, Bazz. Would you happen to know which CVT trans you have? (Located on your build plate. As example, 'RE6F01A')

Cheers.

Re: Changing CVT oil - Saving lots of money

hello guys .... newbie X Trail owner, Brit expat living in Philippines .... I introduced myself a week or so ago ...presume I'm allowed to post now...

We just bought a 2011 T31 2.5 cvt and I'm anxious to change the cvt fluid as soon as poss. I too decided against buying Nissan NS-2 and opted for Amsoil Synthetic CVT fluid. I know Nissan make a big deal about only using NS-2 but the dealer here wanted around £60/ L !! ..needless to say..i didnt hang around.
So..I've now got my Amsoil and am ready to get the cvt drained n filled. I note a few vids on Youtube on the subject and it seems pumping the old fluid out via a cooler return is a preferred method ...is that the case?

Reason I ask ..is..having looked at my X Trail ...I cant find anything that looks like a 'cooler' at the front of the car ..aside of the obvious rad n condenser of course. I then read that its actually a water/fluid cooler..not an air/fluid cooler ...again..is that the case? Service manual seems to suggest that but I cant find the thing ...anyone know where it is? .... and is this 'return line pumping' something that XTrail cvt owners do?

sorry for the extensive first post guys .... I asked the same question over on the UK XTrail forum too ..but I think most UK T31's are diesel ..and therefore not CVT ... not sure how common cvt XTrails are in UK ... but you guys seem to have more experience of them..hoping I can get some goid advice about the cvt drain/flush/refill procedure here .....

ta fellas...

oh and great to hear someone else decided to use an alternative fluid and has had no issues at all since then.

UPDATE: ...just realised my X Trail doesnt have a cooler for the cvt! .... so..the 'pump out' option cant be done and I'm stuck with several drain n refills instead ...

Re:

bit of an update about my cvt...

after some research about this cvt cooler business I finally sussed out exactly what the deal was regarding the cvt and its cooler(s).
All the cvt transmissions fitted to XTrails have a 'cvt cooler' ..HOWEVER, its not a proper cooler in the true sense of the word...ie its not a matrix thing at the front of the car. Its the beehive looking thing on the top front of the cvt ..under the battery tray. Actually it is better described as a heat exchanger ..because it relies on engine coolant to equalise the temp of the cvt fluid. My guess is that this is to aid a quicker warm up of the cvt fluid. To me this seems rather questionable and I am half tempted to remove the coolant lines from this 'beehive/cooler' ..and let the fluid warm up naturally. Perhaps in the colder climates it might be useful...but here in Phils ... I just dont think it is beneficial at all ..and possibly even a bad thing. My thinking..and that of others all over the 'net was that heat is a killer of these cvt units.... keep the fluid cool and the chances of it staying reliable greatly increase.

Anyway ..there are 2 types of these 'beehive/coolers' ... a 2 port and a 4 port upgraded one. The 2 port one only has coolant in/out lines and the actual cvt fluid never gets external to the cvt. The 4 port one has both coolant lines AND flow & return lines for cvt fluid. This is the important one because obviously that means the cvt fluid can be routed to a suitable external matrix fitted to the front in the airflow. The good thing is...they are interchangeable ..and the 4 port one can be retro fitted to 'upgrade' the 2 port version. Actually I have a copy of a Nissan work order which details how Nissan techs should do this when a customer complains about cvt problems! .. which of course says clearly that Nissan know this cvt is living on the edge..so far as fluid temperature is concerned at least.

Some models of X Trails came with this upgraded cooler & matrix package from the factory ... perhaps it came as part of a towing pack?.. i dont know exactly. Certainly tho ... my Philippine market T31 did not ..which seems a massive error..given ambient temps here. Consequently I have just completed the retro fit of the 4 port cooler and suitable matrix to my T31. That, along with changing the small filter...and a change of fluid to Amsoil Synthetic and i feel much more confident that it will be reliable now.
I have also just got hold of a new pickup/strainer and pan gasket ..and I'll be changing that too when I get chance.

The upgraded 4 port cooler was about US$100 shipped from China...and a decent B&M matrix was about the same money from Amazon in the US. 20L of Amsoil cvt fluid bought locally was another US$200 ..so..its cost me 400 bucks to get the car to where i feel confident in it. The strainer, small filter & gasket were about 50bucks delivered from Amayama ...

I took some pics of the fitting process..it wasnt difficult at all ... most of the time is spent removing and refitting things for access ..bumper, battery, batt. tray, lh front wheelarch liner. I posted about it on the UK X-Trail forum but will try to get the pics uploaded here too as soon as poss.

I dont know how many Aus T31 cvt units came with the upgraded cooler ... not a clue..but I would suggest that if yours DOESNT..then for around US$400 inc new fluid ..you can fit it..and probably extend the life of your cvt. Even if you wish to retain the Nissan NS-2 ..and just fit the cooler package for $200 US.

My cvt is quieter now than before .. and has not suffered any ill effect from the change of fluid. ...admittedly tho..I have not driven it so much since I fitted the cooler & changed the fluid.

Re:

..few pics to illustrate the job..

this is looking down at the original cooler/heat exchanger ...after removing the intake trunking, battery, batt. tray ..and moving the ecu out of the way ... without disconnecting it.
Image

this is the view from the front LH wheel arch ..after removing the liner ..note: this is actually looking diagonally upwards .... not the greatest access but do-able. You can see it only has the 2 coolant ports. I had already removed a couple of the M6 bolts.
Image

This is the 4 port 'upgraded' cooler/exchanger .... pattern parts are available from a few places..mine was a Chinese one but seemed ok .... the first one I ordered from ebay in US ..but it disappeared in transit. A genuine Nissan one is a fortune. .. around US$350 .
Image

after unbolting the cooler from the cvt you can see the end of the small fluid filter ...it just pushes on there. I also left the coolant lines connected to the old cooler until I had the new one bolted on. ..just to prevent any coolant getting inside the open hole.
Image

the new 4 port cooler bolted onto the cvt ... 3 of the 4 bolts are easily got to from the wheelarch ..the last is accessed from above with a spanner ..pretty easy. The original cooler is in the bottom of the pic..unbolted but still with coolant lines attached
Image

..Coolant lines now transferred over to the new cooler ... now just waiting for the cvt fluid flow & return lines to the matrix ... top barb is flow ..and they are are about 8mm ..I used 5/16" hose and it was perfect.
Image

..this is the matrix I bought ... I could have got a super cheap chinese thing locally but went for something a bit more reputable from the US. Its about the same size as the oem matrix on the factory installation...comes with some decent hardware and mounting stuff too. The supplied hose was a bit too short for 2 lengths..and a bit too loose when fitted over the smaller 8mm barbs on the cvt cooler ... I bought some 5/16" hose locally .. much better.
Image

..this is the crossmember below the radiator ...if you remove a small section of covering plastic..there are several unused welded M6 nuts. This is what the factory install uses to hold the matrix..so I did the same ...
Image

..using 3 bits of the supplied perforated bar ..suitably bent ..it was pretty easy to get the matrix into a good position .. pretty much where the factory install is. I kept a good 1.5-2" seperation between the matrix and the ac condensor behind it. Sprayed the shiny steel perf. bar with some black paint to keep it all inconspicuous...
Image

..finally...connected the matrix to the new cvt cooler ... and then pumped out the old fluid thro the new cooler, hose and matrix into containers ... really just to flush the new parts..just in case any hidden manufacturing bits were lurking inside!
Image

.thats it ... reconnect the fluid flow & return lines ..and top up with new fluid. I did several drain n refills ... getting about 6L out each time ...with a short drive after each one. I did the install in 2 halves ...the matrix first, while I waited an age for the new cooler to arrive...then the upgraded cooler.. each half took about an afternoon. I'll do another drain n refill in a few months after I get the new pan strainer fitted and pan cleaned out.

Re:

very nice job BertoKnee.

I dont know if my t31 has this 2 or 4 tubes in the heater exchange.
I will try to see this.

I know my t31 has made 2 oil changes in the cvt. One at 40k km and second on 135k km.

I put now a OBDII and a app called CVTz50 in my phone that I can reset the "deterioration" number of cvt oil.

You can see this app during my firsts tests in this topic:

Re:

just look through the front bumper to see if you have an additional matrix sat there .... a small one. If you do, then you almost certainly have the 4 port cvt heat exchanger already. If not, then probably just the 2 port is fitted.
