T31 200,000 k Service

Well guys.
The old beastie is in for its 200,000 k service.
She has been a beaut, never given me any trouble and still runs like a new car.

Tow a 1.5 ton boat from time to time and does 150k a day to and from work.

But I have just been informed that the clicking/rattling sound under the bonnet is a cactus alternator.

OK I say just fix it, oh and the battery has been cooked as well.
Not a problem, Cant fault this car so keep it running.

Then they quote me the cost.
$[sign in to see URL] for the alternator................................................

Pardon??? I say

$[sign in to see URL] ............................................

I say, I don't need a new engine, just the alternator.

They are currently looking at an aftermarket one for me.
Just as well these X trails don't break down often, Id need a second mortgage to keep it on the road.
The last alternator I replaced was on my old Holden, and I thought $[sign in to see URL] was a ripoff by the NRMA, sheesh $[sign in to see URL]????????

Even my Mercury outboard (known to be built of solid platinum parts I'm told) is worth only $[sign in to see URL].

Ill let you know how it goes.

PS;
Cannot fault this service facility, they have been exemplary over the last 5 years of servicing my vehicle, so I know they are legit.
$[sign in to see URL], a new record for a part, beats even my mates Lexus fuel pump.

Well, $[sign in to see URL] for an aftermarket, installed and fitted.

My wife's car had a complete air conditioning rebuild for $[sign in to see URL] a couple of years back.

The battery will be left for a little while, it may come good after being charged properly with a good alternator.
If not, Ill be up for a new battery as well.

Still in shock about the price of an alternator.

But as stated, its been a damn good car for the last 5 years and 100,000 klm
never missed a beat.

All up, this service will cost me close to $[sign in to see URL], don't know how someone not in my financial position would cope with a hit like this in one go.

Ill keep you informed on the total cost.

Total cost was $[sign in to see URL] or thereabouts.

Not too chuffed, but I have paid more for a [sign in to see URL].

But, a couple of things seem to have been corrected with this alternator failure.

The vehicle now no longer vibrates when idling.
Even in gear with the air-conditioning going.

It used to be so annoying, I would put the car in neutral when I pulled up at lights.
Now its totally smooth, just a small but barely noticeable vibration.

Also the alarm isn't going off for no reason any more.
It may have been because the alternator wasn't charging the battery sufficiently and as it drained it set off the alarm. I had a Ford that used to do it. Every time I knew it was up for a new battery.

So it seems that the poor little alternator has been on its way out for a while and now that its fixed , all is right with the world.

I have also been looking around for a replacement for the old girl.
But there aint much out there that can tow my boat, be as reliable, as comfortable to sit in or as capable as the old girl.

I might just keep her a while longer.
