Re: Auxilary 2nd fuel filter fitment to a 2009 M9R t31 xtrail

I can't help much with specifics on the T31 yet (maybe in 12 months when I upgrade), but as a long time diesel owner and working on some Toyota D4D common rails, do yourself a favour and install a water trap filter BEFORE the factory filter if you can. (So you change the "cheap" filter, not the expensive factory one)

I saw a 2012 Hilux go through 3x factory filters from a bad batch of diesel and the bloke nearly spent $4k on new pump and injectors, when it was just a blocked filter, 3 times in a row! He's done nearly 40,000kms on that last filter he put in, without a problem. The factory filters for common rails are very fine and block easily from any crud, which is good, as you don't want that crud in your injectors. But if you can get most of it out with a separator, you can see it, and just dump it out before it goes any further.

If the Hilux had a glass bowl water trap before the factory filter, he would have seen the crud sitting in the bottom of the bowl each time, and been able to dump it out before it blocked the factory filter, hopefully.

Fortunately my old Pathfinder has a steel outer paper cartridge filter with a built in separator and an electronic switch connected to a float, which is supposed to light up the warning light on the dash if there's water in the filter. But every time I changed it, the bottom of the filter was nearly rusted out from water, just not enough to turn the light on. And those filters are nearly $100 each!

While I don't recommend any particular unit, my father used standard paper cartridge and glass bowl separators on his earth moving equipment and trucks for 50 years, and they all took a hiding left out on worksites in the open, rain, hail, shine and dirt flying everywhere. Seemed to keep the crud out of his injectors pretty good. (I know, old Perkins and Caterpillars are no Common Rail setup, but still....)

The "new" WaterWatch product just seems to me to be the same thing but without a paper cartridge filter and with an electronic sensor to sound a beeper.

Re: Auxilary 2nd fuel filter fitment to a 2009 M9R t31 xtrail

Hi Ray,

I added a Donaldson filter earlier this year before I went to Birdsville and the Gulf, even though I've not previously had issues with water in the diesel. My mate's a mechanic and he did the work, but very basic explanation is the main fuel line is attached to the inlet on the Donaldson then from the outlet to the inlet on the factory filter. Interesting thing was after installing the Donaldson it was actually easier to prime up than previously when we changed the factory filter.

Prior to installing this we had been changing the factory filter every 20k service, but as the Donaldson has a glass bowl my mate (the mechanic) decided that based on there being no dirt or water viewable at the last service we wouldn't bother changing either of the filters. A friend of my mates said since installing Donaldson's on all their work vehicles they now only change the Donaldson filter and have not had a problem.

The link below is from my Members Ride post. Let me know if you'd like a photo of the factory filter as well.

The other contraption is an oil catch can.

Hope this info and photo helps

Allan

so how do I view the pics, and I have a Ryco filter but not sure where to connect the
in/out fuel line to on the original filter?

Re: Auxilary 2nd fuel filter fitment to a 2009 M9R t31 xtrail

Sorry Ray,

Appears to be an issue with photo bucket as I can't see them either unless I log into my account. Not sure how else to add photos, but having said that the current photos don't show what you're asking and it's really difficult to get a nice clear photo to show you.

So standing toward the front of the car and looking down on top of the original filter the inlet is furtherest left on top of the filter.

Starting with the incoming fuel line - connect this to the inlet on the pre-filter, minus the primer pump.

Then from the outlet on the pre-filter to the inlet (furtherest left on top of original filter) on the original filter with the primer pump in line. That way when primed up it fills both filters and as I mentioned previously since having the pre-filter installed have actually found priming easier.

I'll try and get some photos up once I work out how.

Allan

Hope this helps.

Hi Guys,

Use Flickr instead of PhotoBucket to share photos on the forum, as PhotoBucket now changed the terms and doesn't allow linking unless you upgrade your photobucket account to be a paid one.

Re: Auxilary 2nd fuel filter fitment to a 2009 M9R t31 xtrail

Hi Ray,

Can't think how to explain it any simpler. As I said previously my mate is the mechanic who fitted it and my description is of the connections looking at it from the front driver's side of the car. It's impossible to get a photo of the incoming fuel line as it's down the right side of the original filter.

I probably won't be able to help you much from your photos, as I'm describing how mine is currently set up and mine is a Donaldson water trap filter, similar to the one mentioned by Wiz Au in his post, not a standard filter like the one you're planning on using.

As Wiz Au said I'd recommend you fit a water trap filter, not a standard Ryco filter.

Allan

Read THIS thread for further details. You would need to create a Flickr account.
