T31 central locking failing drivers side

Hi all, long time since I posted here but I need your help please!

When using my remote to unlock the car, it will unlock 3 doors, but not the drivers side door (except on the very rare occasion).

I can however unlock all four doors if I manually unlock the car using the key in the drivers side door.... so to me it sounds like a loose wire for the remote central locking in the drivers side door.

Am I right? If so....is this something I could attempt to inspect and fix? Or am I going to do some major damage? I am reasonably tech savvy and good with my hands, however have never pulled off a car door and have no idea what I would find.

Thank you in advance.

Bryce

Re: T31 central locking failing drivers side

Hi Bryce,

I had the same problem but with the boot door. I pulled off the panel and measured with a voltmeter to find 12v when the remote is pressed.... nada. Then I pulled out that rubber tube between car and boot door where the wires run and found 1 loose wire right midway the rubber (so the part which is always bending due to opening/closing door. The car end was giving 12v when remote is depressed. Soldered back together and fixed! Id try that.

Note, you might not notice 12v displayed on your multimeter but just the digits changing from zero to non zero for a short while when you press the remote, this is probably an indication you have found the correct wire. If you dont have a multimeter you can stull try the above, if only one wire is found loose its probably the one. You can hold the wires together and let somebody else press the remote.
Also, make sure you do a proper soldering job and use shrink tube. Make sure the wires are not hard from rusting because your soldering joint will fail in the near future (happened to me). If the end of the wire is bad, cut back to where you have good fresh copper and renew that piece of wire.

You might get away with reaching the wires just by removing the rubber but it's a lot easier to work if you get some panels off to slack the wires.

Good luck
