To me it sounds like it is fluttering and would indicate a bad belt tensioner, especially since the noise is there when parked with no load on the engine.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Revhead Kev)Tue, 12 Sep 2017 17:36:49 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2094567,from=rss#post2094567https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2094567,from=rss#post2094567Hey guys, For anyone interested here are a couple of videos to try and show the noise. I understand where you're coming from here, I changed the plugs, oil & filter and air filter, front rotors and pads last weekend and I want to do a few extra jobs but not until this problem is sorted. The sluggishnes I thought was gone but it's now intermittent, I don't know if it's a dodgy coil pack or something else nondisclosed_email@example.com (pominwa)Fri, 08 Sep 2017 21:19:22 +0000 Re: Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2094522,from=rss#post2094522https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2094522,from=rss#post2094522quote:jalalski wrote: Leaking mounts. Generally it will either be loose timing chain from too thin an oil grade (our chain tensioner is hydraulic with spring assist) or worn timing chain guides or valve buckets which have worn and therefore too much clearance (tappet noise). Higher grade oil will helpnondisclosed_email@example.com (Revhead Kev)Thu, 24 Aug 2017 09:53:46 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2094430,from=rss#post2094430https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2094430,from=rss#post2094430I just checked the engine oil and it's showing that it's over the bump on the dipstick-the one above the full mark, would too much oil cause these symptoms? The dealer I bought it off did an oil change so I presume he overfilled it. nondisclosed_email@example.com (pominwa)Wed, 23 Aug 2017 13:16:22 +0000 Re: Engine noise?https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2094426,from=rss#post2094426https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2094426,from=rss#post2094426Once our engines get over the 120k mark they usually like to be run on 10W40 rather than the usual 5W30. This seems to quieten them down and also stop slight oil consumption. Sometimes at the extreme end like your 270k, the timing chain tensioner may need replacing and the "rattle" you hear on acceleration could be from it being too loose under heavy load.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Revhead Kev)Wed, 23 Aug 2017 07:42:09 +0000 Re: Engine noise?https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2094423,from=rss#post2094423https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2094423,from=rss#post2094423I put 98 fuel in as my Falcon ran very smoothly on it and oil I haven't got a clue. It's done around the same mileage as the Starship Enterprise at 270,000 ks but it has full service history. And yes, funnily enough I think it feels like it's running on 3 cylinders when accelerating. Maybe I'm just used to driving a Falcon? 🤔nondisclosed_email@example.com (pominwa)Tue, 22 Aug 2017 18:43:24 +0000 Re: Engine noise?https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2094419,from=rss#post2094419https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2094419,from=rss#post2094419quote:pominwa wrote: Thanks for replying. Yeah I'm pretty handy with the spanners, I forgot to add it's only on accelerating until I get up to speed then it's fine. Makes me think a single injector not feeding in enough fuel then if it's only when accelerating/open throttle but still drives sorta OK? Is it possible for you to say if it feels like it's only 1 cylinder, or all of them when you accelerate? This is hard to do if you're not familiar with various engines and how they sound when running well, and running poorly. I think even in this day and age of OBDII and computer diagnostics, sometimes the old "ear' and experience is just as good if not better diagnostic tool. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Wiz Au)Tue, 22 Aug 2017 11:09:07 +0000 Re: Engine noise?https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2094417,from=rss#post2094417https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2094417,from=rss#post2094417What fuel are you running and which grade of oil ? (208,000kms.) What's your mechanical ability like and do you own a set of feeler gauges? First place I would start with is valve clearances. Is this how they all sound or have I potentially bought a lemon? Any advice will be appreciated.nondisclosed_email@example.com (pominwa)Mon, 21 Aug 2017 14:08:54 +0000
