Engine noise?

Hi,
Having bought my 03 2.5 petrol auto exxy, I've noticed the engine sounds a bit agricultural- almost like a diesel! Is this how they all sound or have I potentially bought a lemon?
Any advice will be appreciated.

Re: Engine noise?

Mine sounds a little "rattly" when cold but nice and quiet when warm. (208,000kms.)

What's your mechanical ability like and do you own a set of feeler gauges? First place I would start with is valve clearances.

Does the noise change with engine temperature or the same all the time?

Thanks for replying.
Yeah I'm pretty handy with the spanners, I forgot to add it's only on accelerating until I get up to speed then it's fine.

Makes me think a single injector not feeding in enough fuel then if it's only when accelerating/open throttle but still drives sorta OK?

Is it possible for you to say if it feels like it's only 1 cylinder, or all of them when you accelerate? This is hard to do if you're not familiar with various engines and how they sound when running well, and running poorly. I think even in this day and age of OBDII and computer diagnostics, sometimes the old "ear' and experience is just as good if not better diagnostic tool.

Re: Engine noise?

I put 98 fuel in as my Falcon ran very smoothly on it and oil I haven't got a clue.
It's done around the same mileage as the Starship Enterprise at 270,000 ks but it has full service history.
And yes, funnily enough I think it feels like it's running on 3 cylinders when accelerating.
Maybe I'm just used to driving a Falcon? 🤔

Re: Engine noise?

Once our engines get over the 120k mark they usually like to be run on 10W40 rather than the usual 5W30. This seems to quieten them down and also stop slight oil consumption.
Sometimes at the extreme end like your 270k, the timing chain tensioner may need replacing and the "rattle" you hear on acceleration could be from it being too loose under heavy load.

Re:

I just checked the engine oil and it's showing that it's over the bump on the dipstick-the one above the full mark, would too much oil cause these symptoms? The dealer I bought it off did an oil change so I presume he overfilled it.

Re: Engine noise?

No, too much oil won't cause your noise.
Generally it will either be loose timing chain from too thin an oil grade (our chain tensioner is hydraulic with spring assist) or worn timing chain guides or valve buckets which have worn and therefore too much clearance (tappet noise).
Higher grade oil will help

Re: Engine noise?

Well I'm going to change the oil on Saturday and put in 10w40 as suggested and see how it goes, funnily enough the sluggishness has gone, maybe it was old fuel in the lines?
Thanks for your answers people 😎
