Headlights - Clearance lights and headlights?

Hi All,

So was shopping around for some bulbs online and decided on a pair of nightbreaker bulbs by OSRAM on special. Before I ordered them I checked and double checked they were the right ones for the car.

However before I ordered I noticed that we have two sets of lights, the small rounds bug eyes type lights (noted in the owner manual as clearance lights) and the large round traditional I'm assuming is high-beam.

My question is, if the osrams have both low and high capability, should they be going in the larger 'high beam' socket?

I did a search of the forum but couldn't find anything in relation to this, it would appear everyone knows something I don't emoticon

Re: Headlights - Clearance lights and headlights?

A long time ago, when Nissan was still called Datsun, they made cars with four forward facing lights. The Datsun 1600, 180B and 200B all jump top mind.
The outer two lights functioned as both low and high beams, and the inner two were simply driving lights (which lit-up with the high beams).
Nowadays, Nissan still employ the four headlight concept in our X-trails, albeit with a more modern, stylised look.
When you turn on your headlights, you'll note that only the outer two (larger) lights come on. Flick your stalk to high beam and all four illuminate.
It's that simple. Two high/low and two driving lights mounted in one, clean-look it.

"Clearance lights" noted in the owner's Manual refers to what we Aussies call "parkers" or "parking lights".

Re: Headlights - Clearance lights and headlights?

Hi BP,

Thanks for the reply.

I'll have to have a look when I get home, so all I would require is one bulb for each side (with low beam and high beam capabilities) to upgrade the lights, is that right?

I feel like a bit of a numpty with the amount of work I've done on my car under the bonnet to not know anything about these lights!

Took a quick photo.

The small lens on the right houses the low beam bulb, and the larger on the left appears to house the high beam bulb, however I've only seen people talking about one type of bulb.

Have I got a different set up??

Re:

The inner lights closer to the grille are the Hi Beam, the outer ones are the Low Beam running lights. The Clearance lights/Parkers are at the top of the headlight and they contain 2 push-in bulbs. You won't be able to buy a single bulb for Hi/Low Beam operation because they're separate. Hope this clears it up emoticon

If you look in your user manual you should see a bulb type for the low beam and high beam like H1, H11, H4, etc. Look for this designation on the bulbs you purchase and you will know they will fit.

Thanks everyone!

Yeah I think I got confused when I saw the bulbs online with both low beam and high beam for x-trails!

Re:

Yeah, that's correct for the older T30 models only which used a single bulb for both Hi and Low beam.
