Well, Jalal, that took me back in time...

Got my letter from PB today asking me to upgrade to a Plus 500 Plan or: "Some features on your account will be disabled".

Does that mean they've finally caught up to me and my avatar and signature will disappear? I suppose I should do something about changing now/soon anyway.

Re: PhotoBucket became a paid Photos Hosting Service

Hi Julie,
My Avatar and signature pics didn't disappear after I got the request to upgrade. That is, I can still see them on my posts so I am assuming others can as well.

For a little while I was still able to expand on other members thumbs/pics but then that was stopped....by PB I assume. I then received the same message to upgrade my account but as stated, my avatar and signature pics are still viewable.

Anyway, Kev fixed had to fix his avatar/signature so I guess it depends on how they were created in the first instan.
I have now tried the Flickr solution and it appears to do the job.

cheers and good luck.

I didn't receive any notification from PhotoBucket just yet and I have 2 accounts with them.

Yes Dave, your Avatar is working fine for now and so is Julie's, but I'd migrate it across to Flickr if I were you.

Re:

Chances are Flckr will end up doing the same thing in the future, so don't reply on them to host important stuff or lots of files that will be linked in many different areas...

What you might be better doing is set up a paid hosting arrangement ($120 a year will get you an unlimted account) and share it among a group of people and keep the costs down.

The problem with the free sites is that once you have EVERYTHING with them and all the links etc pointing to them - You have a MAMMOTH task to have to go back and re-direct every single link that you have used... I am hosting about 4100 images for a mate who has a few complex build threads on other forums and he has spent almost 10 days (3-4hrs a day) doing the re-direct... he is about 1/4 of the way though...

Use free sites at your own risk...

Re:

Got the letter, now it's all gone.

I'm sorry, but couldn't cope with going back and re-doing pics. Just.too.hard. As I'm sure it is for lots of people.

I think we'll ending up having to host our own pics, for a cost - but at least we'll be paying for something we have control over.....more or less. I've been thinking of using a paid site for quite some time, but nothing ever appealed, and then I forgot.

Even so, paying doesn't guarantee forever, when they can shut sites down overnight, like they did with MegaUpload. Lots of people lost all their information, including businesses.

Re: PhotoBucket became a paid Photos Hosting Service

The Photobucket problem was the way they allowed for direct links that showed full-sized pics without having to visit their website. This meant they did not get the advertising revenue which they relied on for their site. With so many users as they state they have then even $1/mth would have seen them rake in plenty of revenue and people wouldn't have minded.

Other free sites do not let you do direct linking and only give you a text link which you need to click and visit the site to view the pics. They get their advertising revenue but people prefer to have visible pics in their blogs and forum posts so it is not as attractive to them.

Flickr allows the direct linking, provided the link to Flickr itself is not removed and the pics have the appropriate Flickr recognition, as stated in their ToS.

For now yes... When they are the only ones left doing it, they can quickly change their ToS and decide that by "X" date, all accounts must be paid for or linking will be disabled etc..

Photobucket had paid accounts and they still kicked them off the system so that they could make them pay $400 (as opposed to $50) - so don't put your entire trust in them..

Remember, if you are not paying for a product, then you ARE the product..

Re: PhotoBucket became a paid Photos Hosting Service

Hi Jalal/Kev

I received that email from photobucket on Monday advising that I was 3rd party hosting etc...naughty naughty and my Avatar pic and signature pic were replaced by the photobucket notification to upgrade. I Got my Avatar pic to work using Flickr as per Kevin's instructions (deleting superfluous info from the pasted URL etc) but using the same technique, I can't get a picture added to my signature. Just the modified URL is displayed as you can see under my signature details.

Any clues as what to do?

Jalal,
I notice you still have your Avatar and signature pics displayed. Is that because Photobucket hasn't caught up with you yet or have you managed to save a Flickr pic to your signature.

cheers all.
