Engine trouble

Hoping someone will have some knowledge of the possible problem and a few suggestions on how to fix it.

Had ongoing problems with the engine for a few months. Lack of power (accelerating), running rough and oil in the coolant (eventually). Tested compression and one cylinder was low. Running with this and the oil in the coolant, deduced head gasket and set about replacing. When removed it was an absolute mess and the gasket had definitely gone. Had the head tested and it was ok but the valves had been bent. Replaced and reassembled.

Car starts perfectly and after tinkering with the timing now idles like it did before. Here's the problem. When I accelerate in or out of gear, there is no power to make the car move and the engine is making a blat or bubbly noise almost like it's being flooded.

Thoughts?

Re: Engine trouble

First off, How many kms has it done ?

Secondly, can you explain a little more how you "tinkered with the timing" ?

Re: Engine trouble

Thanks for the questions Kev.

My little beast has done just over 230kms. I have put on about 40 of these and other then a general lack of power up hills and a thirst for oil, I have had little trouble. Replaced cam and crank sensors being about the worst of it.

I guess that was a little vague! Marked the timing chain and cams etc when removing the head and when reassembled had thought they were lined up exactly the same. upon closer inspection (according to my brother and head mechanic lol) was slightly off. he used the timing marks and our painted marks to put them back in their correct position.

Re: Engine trouble

OK, so now that you have done the head gasket have you retested the compression to make sure it was the gasket causing the low compression and oil usage not the rings ?

Also, what oil are you using ?
It is suggested that for our climate temps, especially in summer, that we use 5W40 instead of the original 5W30 which becomes too thin. It will also help with your aging engine consuming oil too (as it did with mine).

Re: Engine trouble

Have re-tested the compression and they are all between 130-150. The third cylinder was at 65 before the repairs, so pretty happy that the problem was the gasket.

I always use the 5W-40 oil. Someone put me onto it a while back. Has never really made much of a difference.

Re: Engine trouble

If the same happens with the engine not gaining revs quick enough out of gear and sounding like it is dying then there could be an air leak in the system.

Check all hose clamps around the throttle body and intake as well as all the small vacuum hoses to and from the rocker cover and intake to make sure they have been reconnected after the head work. Also check there are no splits in any of the hoses after the MAF.

Re: Engine trouble

Thanks Kev. Will give them all a further check and hopefully something surfaces. Is there anywhere on the forum that shows these air hose connections? I've had a look but so far have been unsuccessful.

Re: Engine trouble

Just go looking along the whole length of the intake tract and across the rocker cover to check there are no loose rubber pipes or open connection points.

Best thing is to grab yourself a free copy of the Electronic Service Manual if you are a full member of the forum emoticon

Re: Engine trouble

Have checked these connections and all seem to be connected correctly. Stumped why it runs so smoothly and won't move. Lost

Re: Engine trouble

When you replaced the bent valves did you also replace the valve stem seals and check the piston heads for any cracks ?
