5W-30 or 5W-40

Hi all,

I had my car serviced at the Nissan dealership for the first 6 years of ownership. Now that manufacturers and extended warranties have expired I plan to do my own minor servicing.
For the first 5 years the dealership used Castrol Magnatec 5W-30 engine oil but I noticed that on the last 2 services (5.5 years and 6 years service schedules) they used 5W-40 oil.
The car has only 107,000kms on the clock,

Not being much of an oil guru, is someone able to advise me of whether I should follow the dealership example and use the 5W-40 oil?? I believe that the 5W-40 is a bit thicker than the 5W-30 so maybe the 5W-40 was used due to the age of the engine?

cheers all.

Re: 5W-30 or 5W-40

Hi Dave,

The 5W-40 is the way to go.
It is not thicker, just better for the higher operating temperatures of our Australian climate and stays thicker at those elevated temps which helps the chain tensioner as it is also hydraulically pressurised.

Thanks Kev.

''Stays thicker at higher temperatures''......then I will go with the 5W-40.
