2010 Nissan xtrail ST-L whining noise

Gday all,

I just joined and this is a great forum, lots of information.

I purchased a 2010 xtrail ST-L 2.5l petrol 4wd and so far it's been a good car. It's done 130,000 and I've kept regular services. When I purchased the car I paid an extra $2000 for extended warranty for up to $8000 value if something goes wrong in 3 years through the car dealership.

Just recently what's been happening after I drive the car for 20 minutes or so is if I put my foot down a bit as the motor revs I'll hear a whining noise and it will whine as the engine de-accelerates. If I stop the car for 10 minutes then drive it won't do it until the motor is warm or if it's a hot day or if I drive up a steep hill.

I've read a few posts on here regarding the CVT, do you think I've got anything to worry about? Do you think the CVT could be on the way out? The car still drives great, I've got no loss in power just the whining noise can be annoying sometimes. I called Nissan and they said the whining noise in the CVT is normal but I'm skeptical to believe them.

I got the drive belt replaced and it's kinda started happening since then. Maybe the belt could be wearing in?

Any feedback would be much appreciated because the CVT is expensive to change over.

Cheers

It could be the tensioner pulley.
The new belt could be putting more tension on the bearing and if it was on the way out then this could make it start to get noisey when heated up.

Re:

keV thanks for the tip,

I took it to a mechanic this morning and he's fairly confident it's the tensioner pulley. I decided to buy the whole tension pulley assembly kit for $220, the auto shop wanted $500 for a gates drive line brand but i bargained them down. The mechanic said he would fit it for $100 so hopefully that fixes the problem.

Thanks again and I'll let you know once it's installed, gotta wait a few days for the part to arrive from interstate.

Re:

Hi reef3136, did it actually solved the issue?

I'm having the exact same issue and thinking of changing the transmission fluid first (using Penrite CVT V)

Also keen to know where did you get the parts from

Cheers,
