Rear main seal on 2004 manual I noticed a reasonable puddle of oil under my '04 X-Trail a couple of months ago and the mechanic tells me it's the rear main seal. I am having to top up around half-a-litre a month now, so it's a decent leak.
I trust the mechanic but is there any way to be sure it's definitely the rms, before embarking on the repair (or getting rid of the car, more likely)?
Any estimates on what the repair should cost? I'm quoted around $2000 + maybe $1000 more if I put in a heavier clutch at the same time. Those figures are "rubbery" so it could be less, could be more.
Is there anything that can be done to reduce the leak without the full repair?
Thanks.
Note: This was apparently a recon motor when I bought the car about four years ago.

Re: Gearbox will have to come away to replace the seal unfortunately. Lots of labour hence the price,You can try the engine 'stop leak stuff' but they are only temp or run thicker oil. Might as well replace clutch if needed.
The oil tell tale is a small groove in the bottom of the bellhousing.
