Engine Bogging Down

Hi All,

My first post here and im sorry if i ramble on. I have an 04 TI Manual X-trail that i absolutely love to drive. The reason im raising this post is that off recently i`ve noticed that my car is not behaving the way i think is right. When i leave work here i have to go up a rather long steep hill and then down the other side to get to the highway, the hill is about 2 mins up the road when i leave work. When i start progressing up the hill and am just about to reach to the top, a few times the car has bogged down when in 4th and i`ve had to change down to 3rd and i lost momentum. The strange thing is, is that is doesnt happen everytime i go up the hill. Some days i fly up there and dont lose momentum (Same Speed and Throttle Position or near enough) and other times the engine just bogs down. It doesnt bog down to the point of stopping, just to the point of needing to change down and doing about 3 1/2RPM in 3rd to get over the top. On this note the other thing i`ve noticed is that sometimes when i start on the hillclimb the car shudders momentarily and then picks up and everythings fine. Usually when this happens i check the oil and its low and top it up and it goes away for maybe a fortnight. I`ve had my mechanic check the compression ratio and its within limits. Last payday i filled the car to the brim to see how many Km`s i`d get out of a tank this morning i put some more in a it was at 420kms which seem low for a 2.0 litre engine. Does anyone have any idea`s on what may be happening. The car`s always serviced and the only thing that`s been changed is the alternator as the clutch went on the old one. I`m probably going to start driving my wife`s Dualis as im concerned something serious is going to happen to the x-trail.

Regards
Danny

Re: Engine Bogging Down

Hi Danny,

A car of this age will now require most of the sensors to be replaced and this includes CAM and Crank as well the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor).

Re:

They sure can Danny. Just use the "Site Search" feature of the forum to locate existing threads which give you a step by step instructions on how to replace each of those sensors.
