'Edit' Getting into T31 Diesel ECM Diagnostic Mode

G'day All

Sunday evening driving home on cruise control, I inadvertently selected cruise ON/OFF & Cancel at the same time causing the SET light to flash. As well the Malfunction Indicator Light [MIL] come on. Tried deselecting/reselecting cruise a number of times initially to no avail. However after braking for a roundabout both systems reset & worked normally.

Yesterday the wife drove the car & had the same problem: cruise SET light flashing & the MIL came on. Checking the vehicle in the garage, the MIL is on steady. I downloaded the ECM Diagnostics/ECM Reset procedure.

My problem is that I have gone through the procedure a number of times & cannot seem the get the vehicle to enter the ECM Diagnostics mode: MIL remains on steady.

Any suggestions?

Ian

Could it be a clogged DPF related fault?

Re: T31 Diesel ECM Diagnostic Mode

G'day Jalalski

That was my immediate thoughts.

Further to my last: the wife drove into town & the cruise selected & set ok. She used the cancel button [very carefully] at an 80kmh zone & the SET light started flashing & cruise would not resume after that. Deselecting cruise SET light extinguished, reselecting cruise & SET light was flashing. After parking & shutting down, the cruise worked ok on the return trip. The cancel button was not used & speed adjusted using the paddle switch. The MIL was on all the time whilst the ignition was on.

I have tried another 3 times to enter the ECM Diagnostic Mode using the posted DIY instructions. What I am doing is:
Turning ignition on
Waiting at least 3 seconds
Fully depressing & releasing the throttle 5 times in under 5 seconds
Waiting 7 seconds
Fully depressing the throttle & waiting. MIL does not flash after 10 seconds.

Second attempt:
Turn vehicle off.
Exit vehicle & lock using remote.
Wait until all instrument lights are out.
Unlock using remote. [Made sure that the hand brake was off in case the extra instrument light may have been an issue.]
Repeated above procedure:

Third attempt:
All of the above.

A little loath to go to my local Nissan dealer as they have not been the "best value for money" compared at least to my mechanic.

Any further suggestions before heading off emoticon

Try again and use a stop watch this time, as the time intervals have to be spot on for this to work

Re: 'Edit' Getting into T31 Diesel ECM Diagnostic Mode

Gday Jalalski
Thanks for that suggestion.

Followed your advice & tried the procedure using a stopwatch.

Attempt 1:
Turned ignition ON
Waited exactly 3 seconds
Depressed/fully released throttle 5 times in under 5 seconds
Waited exactly 7 seconds
Fully depressed throttle & waited

After 20+ seconds still no flashing MIL

Shut down & waited 10 minutes

Attempt 2:
Ignition ON
Waited more than 3 seconds
Depressed/fully released throttle 5 times in under 5 seconds [slightly slower this time to ensure the throttle was fully released by taking my foot off the throttle]
Waited exactly 7 seconds
Fully depressed throttle & waited
Still no flashing MIL after 15+ seconds

My car seems to steadfastly refuse to go into the ECM Diagnostic Mode. emoticon

Does ANYONE have any other suggestions of how to get into the T31 Diesel ECM Diagnostic Mode?

Regards
Ian

ps
will ring my mechanic to see if he has the equipment to read the error codes.

Re:

Are you waiting 10 seconds with a depressed accelerator pedal?

The instructions are HERE

Re: 'Edit' Getting into T31 Diesel ECM Diagnostic Mode

G'day Jalalski

Definitely waiting with pedal depressed [or is that 'depressed' pedal emoticon ] for more than 10 seconds.

I have used this procedure successfully on my previous T30; found problem, cleared the code & had the problem fixed. It is very frustrating that this does not seem to work on my T31.

The DPF light comes on when the ignition is initially turned on & extinguishes [& stays off] when the vehicle is started.

I am suspecting that the system has 'detected' a problem when I inadvertently selected cruise off & cancel simultaneously. Since then it assumes there is a continuing problem as the system has not been cleared. That being said, the cruise system functioned normally this morning when tested; cruise selected, speed set, cancel then resume worked a number of times without fault; the MIL remains on.

Will continue the troubleshooting process emoticon .

My mechanic does not have a scan device but another mate does. He will be able to read the error code but does not have access to the reset codes. May be the best course of action unless someone can suggest an alternative.

I just might have a 'special' vehicle...one of those new driverless technology ones that knows better than us mere humans emoticon

Hopefully will be able to access the scan device tomorrow [definitely on Saturday] & find out the error code. I am not sure if I will be able to reset the MIL...may have to pick the collective brain on that one if it arises.

Thanks Jalalski for your advice.

Re: 'Edit' Getting into T31 Diesel ECM Diagnostic Mode

Hi Ian,
Why press the Cancel button at all ?
Usually when I wish to drop out of cruise it is because I have to slow down and touching the brakes will cancel cruise.
There have only been a handful of times when I have had to press the Cancel button such as slowly gaining on another vehicle on a single lane road.
