T31 Noisy Alternator?

Hi, I have a rattling/ knocking sound coming from the alternator area and want to know if anyone else has the same sound. When idling either in gear or neutral, at around 750 rpm, with the a/c on, the noise is present. If I turn the a/c off and put the headlights on, the noise is there. If there is little load on the alternator, there is no sound. If I increase the revs in either situation, the noise disappears. I find that the lower the revs, the more noise it makes. Its very noticeable from inside the car. The alternator is charging at around 13.92 volts at idle. The car has done 93,000kms, has no problems starting and has had a new battery in January. If I put a long scewdriver on the alternator and listen for sounds, there is a whine but I think that's normal. The mounts are tight. Should I do a idle reset just to make sure its not idling to low?

Thanks

Re:

Alternator Overrun Pulley... The alternator pulley has a one way clutch inside to reduce vibrations on the belt.
My AOP was seized...so there was allot of vibration...of course after replacement everything is ok...
I paid €300 to have it replaced...the part by the way is a €30 part...therefore I do all my servicing by my self now 🤑 Because I got tired of being (you know what) by no good monkeys...😹.
A simple way to see if the AOP is working ok...
Open hood while motor running...
Step on accelerator...say 3000 rpm...switch engine off...listen to the AOP...when the belt stops going round...the inside of the alternator will still be running for approx 3-5 sec while making a noise.
That is how it should be.
Btw...just received my in tank fuel filter...will be replacing that at 137,000 km...BY MY SELF!

Re: T31 Noisy Alternator?

Ok, Thanks for that. You learn something every day. I've been hearing that sound in my other car, an EL Ford Falcon for the last 435,000ks, ( still the original alternator, and engine), and was wondering what it was. Now I know. I don't think I've heard that sound, but I will check it as soon as I get a chance.

Thanks Heligeorge emoticon

Re:

Since technology moves on and assuming all new cars would benefit from it, it would be reasonable to assume that all new cars are fitted with AOPs...therefore this video gives an overview on what this AOP is all about.
http://youtu.be/4EXYP1CmL9Q
Could be something to have in mind next time there are bad...excessive...unusual...noises coming from the engine bay.
My ignorance cost me allot for something I could have fixed by my self.
The belt was all over the place...and btw...prior to diagnosing and fixing the AOP... (a few years back) the belt was thrown off...luckily...I noticed the temp went to red...the steering got hard...after having had the car towed and to the dealer the belt was replaced for €150 ... The belt was thrown off the pulleys...no one knows why...no one at the dealership checked to see why...I paid...and later after excessive noise and play I figured out what was the problem...
Good luck mate.

The AOP is "AOK". Sorry, but I just had to. emoticon Funny how you get used to noises and can't remember hearing them. It sounds like my other car, like something is winding down for a few seconds. That seems ok, so when I get time I'll look into it further. Great youtube clip too.

Thanks again.

Re: T31 Noisy Alternator?

I finally found the noise. I changed the serpentine belt at the 100,000 klm service with a Dayco and the noise has gone. No more rattling noises at idle. emoticon
