Re: Imageshack - no free accounts

Jalal, have you asked Runboard if they have a hosting service free to use for members of boards registered with them ? Maybe even free for premium members and a small fee or limited storage for standard members ?

Re:

No possible mate. They have over 10,000 boards, so opening this feature for such a large number of users will require big money to spend on servers to have the needed capacity to support it and I'd hate to see Runboard become a paid service as a result of it.

Re:

Well, you better update your avatar and signature pics then because they're both dead emoticon

Also, that service doesn't offer any thumbnail code for the hosted images. The BBCode is just a direct link to the image which is often renders it too large to be used on our forum, so our forum software will auto-compress it and will make it smaller but it can not be enlarged.

Re:

With IPS forums you can add on user galleries.
You have to pay for it, but there are constant updates and upgrades. Well worth it if it's a reasonably active forum. Unfortunately I don't think runboard has changed much in the last decade, and I wouldn't expect any more.

That's also why I've bought a few of my own domains/hosting services.
For something like $10/month you can get your own website like 'yourname.com' and email addresses like '[email protected]', along with virtually unlimited space.
That way you'll always have space online, you'll always have the same email address regardless if you change ISP's or hot/gmail change their terms and you need to leave. You'll also get a better email address than [email protected]
Also, nothing like finding your photos on mainstream media outlets because you posted them on facebook etc and no longer have any ownership.
And for those that care, FB in particular chops the guts out the quality of any photo or video you upload.

Re:

This is not an IPS based forum unfortunately and what goes for all other boards on Runboard (as a service provider) goes for us as well.

I do have a domain/hosting service for the forum and that's why we have the (australianxtrail.com.au) domain name secured but I don't want to overload the domain/hosting server with unlimited number of photos when we can easily share them online for free like many other forums are doing.

Re: Imageshack - no free accounts

As of yesterday, Photobucket has done the same thing.
In their terms of use, it says free accounts only get 2GB storage and no linking unless you pay-up.

Don't know if anyone else has been affected by this.

I'll be looking at imgur as suggested by tja
UPDATE:
Found the following in their terms and conditions...
quote:

Also, don't use Imgur to host image libraries you link to from elsewhere, content for your website, advertising, avatars, or anything else that turns us into your content delivery network. If you do – and we will be the judge – or if you do anything illegal, in addition to any other legal rights we may have, we will ban you along with the site you're hotlinking from, delete all your images, report you to the authorities if necessary, and prevent you from viewing any images hosted on Imgur.com.

That's a bit strange. I thought that's why people used the site.

I've put a few things up recently on Google Drive. Can limit it to one pic view only. Seems to work okay.

Re:

I've really only used photobucket for the xtrail forum. Only used 1% of my free allowance, so I'm guessing mine will probably stay linked. Fingers crossed. From the few articles I've read it seems to be utter devastation for a lot of forums and blogs.

Currently we can rely on imgur it seems, but how long before they start charging?

Shstevenson successfully loaded a pic hosted on Dropbox here. Does anyone know how that works.

I've loaded a few pics to Google Drive, but can only link them, no way of placing a thumbnail in a forum. emoticon

Anybody come up with any ideas?

Haven't loaded anything new for ages, life has become a 3 hour each way trip to Cairns every 2 weeks, and I rarely drive the exy in between.
