Spare Key Stolen

Hello everyone.
I was wondering if anyone can help me. Our home was broken into this week while we were out and our spare key was stolen. The next day we took the car to our servicecentre andgot the remaining key reprogrammed, it was $75. We were told that the theif can still enter the car, but cant start it to drive off.
We never keep valuables in the car but do keep alot of stuff in there so we now have emptied the car and have just been bringing stuff as we need it. My partner goes to work early and every morning we have to put the lights on and check in and around the car to make sure no ones there.
We cant go on like this.
To get the entire car redone with new locks is about $1500 and we cant afford it. After having to pay an excess, insurance will only contribute $300 so we can do it.
Its a 2010 xtrail st cv auto.
Someone suggested to us to get a cheap car alarm.
Ive been googling around and i really dont know what to look for and neither does my partner. Neither of us are technically minded to do anything ourselves, it needs to be profesionally installed and we are still under warranty too. It seems theres no such thing as basic car alarms anymore, they are all linked to the central locking and immobiliser.
We are in the outer northern suburbs of melbourne. And cant afford much. If anyone can help direct me where to look, that would be helpful. Because at the moment thd only thing i think we can do is get an alarm done through our service centre and that will cost too a fortune i imagine.

Hi Nancy,

Have you considered grabbing the entire lock set from a wrecker from another xtrail? That way you will have a completely different key set and you may be able to get the dealer to re-program that for your car.

Re: Spare Key Stolen

Hi Jalalski.
Wow, i never thought of that. I will make some phonecalls on monday to see if i can find a set and how much. Because nissan parts told us its $1000 for a new lock set and $500 for labour, locksmithing, eprogramming, etc.. I imagine if we provided the parts, they would still charge the same price for labour.
Thanks for the suggestion, much appreciated.
If anyone has any other great suggestions, please let me know.

Re: Spare Key Stolen

Hello.
Just an update, if anyone is interested. The cheapest i could find using locks from wreckers is $850 fitted.
The cheapest alarm i could find was $580 fitted, and that was a genuine nissan alarm upgrade supplied and fitted by a dealer. For some reason, no other car alarm places returned my calls.
It's still more than we can afford, so we still cant do anything.
If anyone else knows of a place that can supply and fit an alarm cheaper than that, i'd appreciate any ideas.

Re: Spare Key Stolen

Thanks, tried that website, made a request, waited 2 weeks, nothing.
So i was googling around and i read how someone just got an automotive locksmith to rekey the locks. Problem solved! Only cost $400 to get the locks rekeyed. Also got a spare key for only $120.
Wish i'd realised we could do that earlier. The locksmith even deleted the history of the original transponder code, something our dealership didnt do when we got it reprogrammed.
Hope this thread might help someone else in the future because from all ive learnt in the past month, this is becoming a very common problem.

Re:

Sounds like the typical dealer trying to milk you for everything they can, not terribly surprised. Good to see you've found a cheaper way to do it Nancy. I'd be giving the dealer a rip as the labour cost they charge you alone is highway robbery and spare parts is a goldmine for them. Gouging pr*cks.
