X-trail starting problems. MAF? COIL? Other??
Our x-trail (2006, T30 2.5 185,000k) has developed a problem at startup sometimes.
Hard to start and judders for a second or two after startup. Problem intermittent. ECU logged a P0300 (random/multiple cylinder misfire).
My wife reported the problem, but it happened to me twice yesterday when I got use of the car.
Based on her description I had already ordered and replaced a coil pack - one coil measured different resistance to the others so I assumed this was the fault, but clearly not so.
My brief test:
Started fine first thing in the morning, ran fine
Twice in succession I parked car, went to shops for 10-20 mins, came back and it was hard to start, slow to reach a steady idle, absolutely fine to drive after.
I am inclined to think the MAF sensor, so have cleaned it and car has been fine today (5 stop/start during the day). Might order a replacement just in case
Any way to verify? I only have an ELM327 OBD reader and am currently using TorquePro for android as my diagnostic tool. Also have a decent autoranging multimeter.
Any other potential failure items worth looking at?
Compression is even on all four cylinders at approx 12.75bar.
Plugs have about 10,000km on them and look fine, maybe a tiny bit on the hot side.
crank sensor only a couple years old - replaced because it threw a code.

Re: X-trail starting problems. MAF? COIL? Other??
Hi everybody,
Having a similar issue on cold startups.
2004 T30 Xtrail petrol, 159,000km - I have changed the cam and crank sensors to upgraded ones a few years back
I'm finding my Exy has developed a cold starting issue over the past few weeks, making the car noticeably having trouble kicking over to start.
It seems to happen on cold starts, if you switch the car off afterwards and try again, it starts up fine.
If you leave the car for a hour or more (presumably cooling the engine?) it will again have trouble.
Noticable trouble starting over the first 3/4 cranks, then it finds its feet and starts.
Sometimes it will stall completely, and with another go, start up fine.
It never used to do this.
Once warm, car idles lovely.
Drives lovely, with no bucking, missing or hesitation.
No exhaust plumes when it starts: no blue, black or white.
Things I have done since:
- Ran Nulon Total Fuel System Cleaner, no change.
- Cleaned MAF sensor and changed air filter, no change.
- Recent NGK plugs, checked gaps.. 1.1mm? Plugs had a nice chocolate/tan colouring, none have any wetness/soot etc.
- Ran a few more tanks of 98 premium to ensure it's not just a "bad batch"
- I have done an ECU reset maybe 6/7 months agao, might do another though.
- Turned the key and allowed the car maybe 30 seconds or more to "prepare" - still did it.
- Started it with the throttle down maybe 1/3 way down, pretty sure it makes it worse.
- Recent oil and filter service. (would assume this wouldn't matter)
- Recent transmission service. (would assume this wouldn't matter)
Any idea's? Any checks I can preform?
Things I suspect, would be great if anyone can point me to any how to's for:
- Idle Air Control Valve clean/check - is this sensor temperature dependant?
- Fuel pressure/ partially blocked filter?
- air in the line, causing the fuel to track back down?
- throttle body inspection and clean.
Again, I'd really love to hear from anyone with similar experiences and some more checks I can perform or some likely causes.
Thanks in advance,
Will.

Re: X-trail starting problems. MAF? COIL? Other??
just saw this post Im having similar problems.Mine was having problems on cold starts, after changing spark plugs that problem disappeared.
Just a few days ago car started fine drove to work and home, had time out for a cup of tea and a smoke went to start the car it turned over tried to run very very roughly almost as if the timing was way out. after about the seventh attempt it finally started but still running rough and after a few seconds purred like a kitten. 2 days later the same thing happened.
So same as you at the moment hoping we get some good answers.
today I spoke to a racwa roadside assist man and asked about the problem got the usual answer i.e fuel filter, dirty injectors, bad fuel, etc. but he did say that the knock, cam and crank sensors can fail and not send an error code to the ecm so no engine light shows or error codes sent and also those sensors can be removed and cleaned.
like to get some comments on this also
