Also considering adding bars leaks to radiator as a temporary fix as it seems a very small leak. but it has only taken less than 6 months to wreck platinum spark plugs. Also while the engine is being done I agree you should do all you can at the same time. Currently considering buying low km motor and rebuilding mine at leisure as I can do a lot of the work myselfnondisclosed_email@example.com (bqeted)Thu, 11 Aug 2016 01:34:17 +0000 Re: X-trail starting problems. Before you spend $$$. In my opinion, if you're having a gasket problem, then it should show up on a compression test - hot or cold. If it showed up that you had a compression leak at higher temperatures, would re-torqueing, or at least checking the torque settings on the head bolts maybe clamp it down a smidge? Just some thoughts. Also, if you go as far as a motor or head rebuild, be sure to have the timing chain and tensioner replaced, as these seem to be a weak point on the x-trail. I think there are uprated timing chain kits that you could look into and read about in this forum. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Willaus89)Wed, 10 Aug 2016 07:50:13 +0000 Re: X-trail starting problems. Compression test ok. coolant pressure test (cold) ok. seems it may be head or head gasket under heated conditions. motor has done 204,000 kms purrs like a kitten when running. not sure to replace head or complete motor at this stage. comments welcome .,nondisclosed_email@example.com (bqeted)Wed, 10 Aug 2016 01:45:20 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2091630,from=rss#post2091630https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2091630,from=rss#post2091630Hi all, Just a follow up on my starting issue. I ran Nulon Total Fuel System Cleaner, and started on a job roughly 100km from my house, I have been working there for 6 weeks, roughly about week 3 into the job the problem started to become less and less until it finally went away. I am attributing my specific problem to a dirty injector. More information on my specific issues detailed in my previous posts. Most of my driving is local, less than 20 minute drives - it appears the long drives coupled with Fuel System Cleaner and a few tanks of BP Ultimate cured my problem. I sometimes leave my car undriven for a week or so, and I am learning cars (or maybe just xtrails) don't like being parked up and forgotten! I hope this can help anyone else having a "harder than normal" starting issue that isn't battery related. I hope someone else with nondisclosed_email@example.com (Willaus89)Wed, 20 Jul 2016 07:55:08 +0000 Re: Cold Start problemhttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2091505,from=rss#post2091505https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2091505,from=rss#post2091505G'Day X-trailers, My 2004 petrol T30 X Trail has also developed the Cold Start Problem. Cold or fresh depending on where you live,...but here in Qld Austrailia the winter is a chilly 9 or 10 degrees C overnight. The Xtrail won't start but when the temp gets up in the day say about 20 degrees....the xtrails starts and runs like a gem.  I checked spark the old fashioned way,...screwdriver up the lead to the electrode and check for spark jump to earth,...no spark (tried this for two different cylinders), unplugged and reconnected coil connectors, MAF sensor connector,...cleaned the MAF sensor.  I have followed the thread from previous members and changed the Crank and Cam angle sensors. Still same issue. I tried to use the inbuilt ECU diagnostics ( flashing engine light)...and it appears to have an error number "0646" which i can't find in any error description list anywhere ... which lends me to think I'm just not reading it correctly.  Anyway... has anyone got anymore ideas on what I can do to fix the cold start problem.  Thanks in advance for any help. When I first had the problem I talked to a nissan mechanic and he suggested a throttle body clean as a starting point. I think this process is relatively easy if you have a service manual because you may need to reset the idle settings on the ECM. my xtrail is 2002 which i bought at 178 K and now has done 204K all ive done is oil and filter changes, new tyres, spark plugs and dual exhaust mods. My current starting problem is not heat related and purely random only twice 2 days apart and no problems so far for over a week now.nondisclosed_email@example.com (bqeted)Fri, 20 May 2016 03:19:55 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2091310,from=rss#post2091310https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2091310,from=rss#post2091310Nothing? Have you done the routine cam and crank sensors? You don't mention your car type, model, year, kilometres..nondisclosed_email@example.com (Willaus89)Wed, 18 May 2016 05:19:59 +0000 Re: X-trail starting problems. MAF? COIL? Just a few days ago car started fine drove to work and home, had time out for a cup of tea and a smoke went to start the car it turned over tried to run very very roughly almost as if the timing was way out. after about the seventh attempt it finally started but still running rough and after a few seconds purred like a kitten. 2 days later the same thing happened. So same as you at the moment hoping we get some good answers. today I spoke to a racwa roadside assist man and asked about the problem got the usual answer i.e fuel filter, dirty injectors, bad fuel, etc. but he did say that the knock, cam and crank sensors can fail and not send an error code to the ecm so no engine light shows or error codes sent and also those sensors can be removed and cleaned. like to get some comments on this also nondisclosed_email@example.com (bqeted)Wed, 18 May 2016 03:21:43 +0000 Re: X-trail starting problems. It seems to happen on cold starts, if you switch the car off afterwards and try again, it starts up fine. If you leave the car for a hour or more (presumably cooling the engine?) it will again have trouble. Noticable trouble starting over the first 3/4 cranks, then it finds its feet and starts. Sometimes it will stall completely, and with another go, start up fine. It never used to do this. Once warm, car idles lovely. Drives lovely, with no bucking, missing or hesitation. No exhaust plumes when it starts: no blue, black or white. Things I have done since:  - Ran Nulon Total Fuel System Cleaner, no change.  - Cleaned MAF sensor and changed air filter, no change.  - Recent NGK plugs, checked gaps.. 1.1mm? Plugs had a nice chocolate/tan colouring, none have any wetness/soot etc.  - Ran a few more tanks of 98 premium to ensure it's not just a "bad batch"  - I have done an ECU reset maybe 6/7 months agao, might do another though.  - Turned the key and allowed the car maybe 30 seconds or more to "prepare" - still did it.  - Started it with the throttle down maybe 1/3 way down, pretty sure it makes it worse.  - Recent oil and filter service. (would assume this wouldn't matter)  - Recent transmission service. (would assume this wouldn't matter) Any idea's? Any checks I can preform? Things I suspect, would be great if anyone can point me to any how to's for:  - Idle Air Control Valve clean/check - is this sensor temperature dependant?  - Fuel pressure/ partially blocked filter?  - air in the line, causing the fuel to track back down?  - throttle body inspection and clean. Again, I'd really love to hear from anyone with similar experiences and some more checks I can perform or some likely causes. Thanks in advance, Will.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Willaus89)Tue, 17 May 2016 19:47:57 +0000 Re: X-trail starting problems. MAF? COIL? I now need to verify if moving the new coil to number 2 cylinder, or cleaning the MAF sensor fixed it. I expect it was the MAF, so will put the original coil back in and then update with resolution. nondisclosed_email@example.com (UNM)Thu, 06 Aug 2015 11:40:51 +0000 X-trail starting problems. MAF? Hard to start and judders for a second or two after startup. Problem intermittent. ECU logged a P0300 (random/multiple cylinder misfire). My wife reported the problem, but it happened to me twice yesterday when I got use of the car. Based on her description I had already ordered and replaced a coil pack - one coil measured different resistance to the others so I assumed this was the fault, but clearly not so. My brief test: Started fine first thing in the morning, ran fine Twice in succession I parked car, went to shops for 10-20 mins, came back and it was hard to start, slow to reach a steady idle, absolutely fine to drive after. I am inclined to think the MAF sensor, so have cleaned it and car has been fine today (5 stop/start during the day). Might order a replacement just in case Any way to verify? I only have an ELM327 OBD reader and am currently using TorquePro for android as my diagnostic tool. Also have a decent autoranging multimeter. Any other potential failure items worth looking at? Compression is even on all four cylinders at approx 12.75bar. Plugs have about 10,000km on them and look fine, maybe a tiny bit on the hot side. crank sensor only a couple years old - replaced because it threw a code. nondisclosed_email@example.com (UNM)Sat, 01 Aug 2015 18:17:21 +0000
