T30 Rola Rear Rail Mount not aligning with mounting holes

G'day All,

I have just purchased some Rola APX001-2 Roof Racks. The front Bar and rail mounts have gone on no worries at all, I have dramas with the rear.

It seems the holes in the roof rack mounting bracket (under the rail blank) don't align with the rola rail mount.

Does anyone know if the rear mounting bolt holes dimensions relative to the rail mount recess are slightly different compared to the forward mounts or do I have a possible defect in the T30? Both left and right are off by the same amount.

Please see photos to help paint my predicament.

The last photo concerns me as the mounting bracket seems to be offset to the opening in the rail. Does anyone know if there is any play in this (noting I'd have to remove the headlining to adjust if possible).

I'm tempted to just file one end of the Rola rail mounts to fit but this will cause a gap at one end.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Re:

There should be no play in the roof rack bracket as it is held by 2 welded bolts on both sides of the mount and then nuts from inside the roof (under the lining).

I can see that the Rola brackets are marked (left and right), so I am assuming you're trying to fit them on the correct side of the car?

Hi Jalalski,

Thanks for the response. You assume right re: trying to fit them to the correct side of the car (I even tried the opposite orientation just in case!)

WRT 'play', i was referring to my hope that the holes accommodating the welded bolts and nuts may have some room for fwd/aft adjustment (which I doubt).

Considering Rola were the manufacturer of the Nissan genuine racks for the T30, and these look to be the same design, I called a dealer to check on the availability of the genuine rail mounts/adapters. He said there were different variants from 2003 onwards, which has me wondering if there is a difference in dimensions between T30 series. The pre 2003 were no longer available.

Would be great to compare my rear mounting holes with another late T30 along with a series 1.

Re:

The Rola website rack selector showing these roof racks being the same from October 2001 to September 2007, which means they would be the same for all T30 models (see HERE).

I would call Rola and raise this issue with them direct to see what they say.

This is precisely why I bought them assuming there'd be no hurdles.

Definitely my next port of call... But I fear for some reason my car will be the issue...

I'll let you know what I nut out

Re:

Went to a roof rack place yesterday and he mentioned that he'd seen play in the X-Trail rails causing this issue. He suggested removing the front roof rack and trying again after bumping the rails fwd aft as required.. I was skeptical at first considering the front mounts were fitted and the rear mounts were out as much as they were... But he was spot on!

Turns out it was play in the rails themselves. After removing the front mounts and adjusting the rail position, I found a happy medium were both fwd and aft rail mounts would fit. Not surprising I guess considering the rail clips are on channels under the rail rather than holes...

Problem solved!

Good stuff. I would never have guessed that, so it's a good tip for anyone coming across a similar problem emoticon

Re: Re:

I was just going to suggest sliding the rails back/forward a bit as I refitted mine yesterday and needed to slide the rail a bit to the rear to make them fit.
