Overheating issue

Hi All, I have a 2001 T30 which is having on-going overheating issues.
So far I have changed the radiator, which helped a bit, and the thermostat, which also helped, but it is not yet back to perfect.

I know the Xtrail has 2 thermostats, but am not sure how to access the 2nd thermostat - the Water Control Valve.

With the radiator and T-stat (base of the top radiator hose) changed the car drives as normal, but on a hill the temp will spike. If I hit the demist button the temp drops, and if I back-off or go downhill the temp also drops.

I'm thinking that it can only be the Water Control Valve because I know the radiator is good, new coolant, and the top T-stat is good.

The engine is running like a clock, no noises or slipping belts.

I would like to change the WCV but don't know it's location. Can anyone advise?

Thanks in advance,
Simon C.

Re:

So you changed the head gasket?

Have you done a compression test on the engine block to see if everything is OK?

Re:

Hi Jalalski,

are you talking about the problem I had 18 months ago? Yes, in a way, I did an engine exchange. The headgasket is good. Engine is running perfectly, coolant is clean & green, engine oil also clean, exhaust colour is good.

I suspect the Water Control Valve is at the engine block end of the lower radiator hose, just below the exhaust manifold.

Can anyone confirm, or post a diagram of the Water Control Valve (2nd thermostat) of the Q25 engine?

Thanks & regads,
Simon C.

Re: Overheating issue

Hi Simon,

Yes, I thought you're still battling that old engine of yours, as you never told us that you've done a swap since you reported problems with it.

Anyway, here a copy from the ESM showing the location of the WCV:

To get to the WCV you will need to drain the coolant. Make sure you're using a Genuine Nissan coolant and nothing else.

Re: Overheating issue

Have you checked the fan operation ?
There are 2 fans as you know, one for normal temp control and one for the aircon.
Maybe one of them is not working ?

Re:

Hi Thanks for the diagram.

I did post that I found an exchange engine and had that fitted. No engine problems since the swap, until the overheating issue. I posted at the time that I thought it was better to spend $2500 on an engine exhange than to junk the 2001 X-trail which was otherwise good!

I have now changed both thermostats. The important trick was to make sure that the T-stat with the same temp rating is used in each position as the 2 T-stats supplied by Repco have different ratings.

Once I changed both T-stats the overheating issue has been fixed.

Thanks once again for your help!
