Auto Trans shift points

Not sure if this has been discussed before, I have looked but found nothing so far. Should larger diameter tyres on an T30 with an automatic transmission be fitted what will it do to the shift points of the auto trans? I have seen discussions here that an approx. 7% larger diameter tyre corrects the speedo inaccuracy. I know larger tyres on my JK Jeep with an auto caused a few issues, easily fixed though. So the question is what can I expect the transmission to do?

Thanks Glen

Re: Auto Trans shift points

Hi Glen,

I have increased from the standard 215/16/65 upto a 225/16/70 and not noticed anything odd about the transmission shifts.

What were the issues with the Jeep when you increased tyres and what was the difference in them ?

Re: Auto Trans shift points

Hi Kev,
thanks for the info. The Jeep was a pain and didn't like going to 5th (overdrive) or 4th for that matter. It would happily cruise at 2500 at 10km/hr. But diesel is way to expensive for that. AEV do a nifty box that plugs into the OBD2 port and can recalibrate lots of parameters. Actually it tells the computer that my 285/70/17s are the right tyre size and the computer controlled trans shifts appropriately. So now I am back to 1700 at 100km/hr.

So back to the yet unpurchased x trail. If my math is right, 215/65/16 is a 27 inch tyre and yours now runs 225/70/16 which is a 28.4 inch tyre with no problems. Thats roughly an extra 3/4 of an inch underneath which is good. Makes me wonder how tall a tyre will start the trans doing funny things?

Thanks Glen

Re: Auto Trans shift points

Going bigger than these will mean much more than any possible transmission hiccups. You will need to do major body modifications to the wheel arches to stop rubbing of the tyres.

Check out this threadwhere a member (Jimmy) put 245/65/17 MT's on his Xtrail to see what I mean.

Re: Auto Trans shift points

Kev,
thanks for that link, I will have to msg Jimmy, good looking X Trail for sure. His tyres are an inch bigger than what I am looking at, and that 1/2 inch clearance can mean a lot, both with regards to scrubbing or not and dragging something or not.

Thanks Glen
