Vibration leading into a wild goose chase...

The vibration is in the engine-somewhere. I have heard and read suggestions for tires, engine mounts, CV's, exhaust, gear box you name it but the noise will happen under load and when stationary. This vibration is concerning and annoying as it will vibrate the whole vehicle (but not the steering) and nearly rattle my teeth along with all the mirrors while driving. I have had the Exy in the shop (mechanic is experienced and recommended - dealer sends their tricky ones to this guy) with suspicions of the Harmonic Balancer being out of whack. When opened up to examine, there were no signs of damage. After a call to Nissan, there was a suggestion that the flywheel could be on the way out. Nissan confirmed that six have been sold/installed in the last month here in Newcastle. Seems logical so, new flywheel and clutch were installed and the vibration now happens at lower rpm and is getting louder. All maintenance has been done regularly, diff oils, transfer case oils, plugs have been replaced, timing is spot on, no metal on metal anywhere. What are the chances the Harmonic Balancer is expired with little signs of damage? I do need a reliable vehicle and I have just spend a chunk of change on the clutch. The frustration of a potential break down or long term damage is worrying but I am not a rich man and cannot afford to keep throwing money on a wild goose chase. Can you guys and gals help me out please!?

Thank you,

Jesse

Re:

Hi Jesse,

Please include your exy model and year of manufacture in your signature to make answering future questions easier for all, as we have 3 generations of xtrails to deal with on our forum emoticon

Now, I know your exy is a T30 model and in this model there was an issue with the hub separating from the axle due to seized wheel bearings, so my first suggestion to you is to remove all wheels and inspect the hub nuts to see if they're loose. You then need to inspect all 4 wheel bearings to make sure they're not shot.

I doubt it's the balancer that is causing the vibration, as I have never come across a faulty one before.

Re: Vibration leading into a wild goose chase...

Just a suggestion, and I know it's a bit of a long-shot, but having worked with rally cars for many years I have come across a similar problem, just the once.
We found that the tailshaft had 'thrown a weight'. Every tailshaft, flywheel and crankshaft has to be balanced, and seeing as you say that you're not getting any vibration feedback through the steering wheel, and your flywheel and clutch have been replaced, the next obvious culprit would be a drive shaft.
Not the front two, as we've mentioned, no steering wheel shudder, so the tailshaft running to the back diff. is the obvious choice.
Put the car up on a two-post hoist, so it's held up by the body, and have a look at the length of the tailshaft. Scratches, dents, a bend or bow, and the weights....especially the weights.
If you don't see anything obvious, start the engine, put the car into 4x4 mode, engage 1st and let it idle the wheels. This way you'll see the tailshaft rotating. Once again, have a look for obvious problems as the shaft rotates. If you still don't 'see' the problem, bring up the revs and have a good look, from the front towards the rear and vice-versa, down-the-length of the tailshaft. Any wobbles?
As a final test, we'd hold a steel ruler against the body, so it's only JUST touching the tailshaft and repeat the above. Watch the ruler. Does it move, or can you see light between the ruler and the shaft when the shaft is spinning?

As I said at the start, simply a suggestion, but it worked for us.

Re: Vibration leading into a wild goose chase...

"Under load and when stationary" suggests to me it is not a drivetrain issue or wheels but either a fueling or sparking problem making the engine run rough.

I would have all the injectors checked and thoroughly cleaned and the spark plugs checked/replaced.

How many kms has the Xtrail done ?
Maybe the chain is stretched or the tensioner is not keeping the chain tight so the timing changes when idling or under load from normal easy running to cause the roughness.

Thank you for all the suggestions, I'm going to continue the hunt and will certainly share what I find when I find it!
