Fluid changes

Hello Xtrailers,
Xtrail 2005 qr20de automatic 2,0 L 130,000 kms.
I have in the past year :
Changed all of ATF with dexron III plus changed atf filter .
Changed oil plus filter.
Changed the rear diff oil with castrol syntrax 75w-90 GL5 (500 ml).
Changed transfer case oil with castrol syntrax 75w-90 GL5 (300ml).

Question: is there front diff case oil that must be changed?
I am assuming the front diff is lubricated with the atf of the automatic gearbox and therefore there are no more fluid changes to be made on the transmission.
Thank you G.

Re: Fluid changes

Hi HELIGEORGE,

You are right. The front differential is incorporated in the automatic transmission, the whole unit often being referred to as the TRANSAXLE. I find it strange that this differential is lubricated by the thin automatic transmission fluid rather than the usual thick SAE 75-90 oil, as in the rear differential and the transfer box.

I am currently searching for a cheap practical way of changing the auitomatic transmission fluid (ATF). The point is that whether you pay a fortune for a complete flush at the authorised dealership or drain and refill 2-3 times yourself, a lot of expensive fluid will be wasted. You see you can't just drain and refill as with engine oil, given that half of the fluid is retained in the torque converter and the fluid radiator. Surely there must be some clever way of draining the whole unit in one go and then refilling.

Cheers,
BRIAN

Re: Fluid changes

Well I can help you here from a now experienced transmission oil changer!
First attempt was to drain the transmission fluid from the pan ... Remove the pan...wipe the pan and two ring magnets in the pan...replace the fluid strainer...replace the the pan...and fill with fresh fluid ....about 4 liters or so in the pan...
Then run the car and after the new fluid mixes with the old fluid...drain through pan bolt and replace and so on and so on...
Waste of ATF ...waste of money...better than nothing but not the right way to go...
After you tubing I found a video...I did as on video and all is good.
Basically if you remove the pan and inspect or replace the fluid strainer, it's a good idea.
The magnets had black sludge which I wiped off.
If you remove the pan so much the better.
If not...then its still ok.
Now, with the fluid drained through the pan bolt, replace the bolt and fill to normal level by checking with dip stick.
The fluid goes through a cooler in the radiator.
There are two hoses...one to rad...the other from rad.
Disconnect the hose that sends to radiator...(on my xtrail it's the hose that's connected to the down facing tube).
Connect a hose to a large bucket...
Now with fresh fluid in the pan...and hose from engine to rad in bucket...attach funnel on dip stick tube...start engine...fresh fluid goes into transmission...old fluid goes to bucket...keep pouring fresh fluid into pan through funnel until from brown fluid you get red fluid coming out...
Voila...once you are getting red fluid out the transmission...switch engine off...reconnect hose to radiator...check fluid level...add accordingly....
I will submit reply to you now...and will go to YouTube to try find and post vid...best,
George.
