Upgraded Batteries that fit

Hi all,

With our Xtrails relying so much on electronics and the drain they put on the smallish battery supplied, I thought some may wish to upgrade the standard battery with the largest possible which will fit without modifications to the battery tray.

The choice of battery relies on 3 main details...
1. CCA Rating (Cold Cranking Amps) which determines the ability to turn over the starter motor for starting in cold weather.
2. RC Rating (Reserve Capacity) which is the number of minutes for which 25 Amps of current can be drawn from the battery and still be able to start the engine.
3. Physical size and terminal positions such that it will fit the area allocated for the battery and have the +ve and -ve leads connect without strain or rewiring.

In my opinion, having the highest RC rating is the most important when 4WDing and usually physical size is the main determining factor in the maximum CCA and RC ratings available in a battery for the Xtrail, or any vehicle, unless you are prepared to move the battery to a different position where there is more space and rewire the main connections.

The T30 usually has a 55D23L battery which has a CCA=540 and RC=100.
There is a slightly upgraded 75D23L battery which has CCA=620 and RC=120 and is exactly the same physical size.

The largest and best that I have found and recently installed is the NS70LX with CCA=670 and RC=160. The physical dimensions are only 29mm longer but it fits perfectly into the battery tray without modifications and gives a 60% increase in the reserve capacity of the battery.

I encourage members with T31 and T32 models to find and post battery models which they have tested and found to be the largest possible to fit their Xtrails without modifications.

Hi Kev,

The battery for my Red Bull is on the way out, so I thought I would buy one and keep it in the garage in case my battery dies.

The T31 factory battery has the same part number as the T30 (55D23L-MF) and it's Panasonic which I think is rated at 640CCA

I found the CCA670 you mentioned at supercheap auto HERE at $239.00, so is this the one and is this a good price?

Kev, are you sure it will fit the factory battery tray? I just went out and measured the tray and it's 260mm wide give or take, so am just worried that the battery may not fit inside the tray fully.

Fits my T30 tray perfectly Jalal but of course the T31 tray may be different. Measure the battery like I did to gauge the difference. The bottom of the battery is just slightly smaller than the maximum dimensions. Have a look at it in the shop and like I did, take your battery tray into the shop to try it.

Yep, I might have to do that. Didn't want to remove the battery tray from the car to save time, but I guess it's best to do this to be sure it fits.

Found it on eBay selling for $195 in Windsor somewhere.

Re:

Just bought the NS70LX battery from SuperCheap Auto for $195.00 as they have priced matched the eBay price which is awesome.

The battery will fit with no problems as it only measures 250mm at the bottom section.

Thanks for the heads-up about this battery Kev emoticon

Great Jalal.

So we now know the NS70LX fits both the T30 and T31.

All we need now is to find out the T32 battery. Is it also the 55D23L as standard ?

Re: Upgraded Batteries that fit

Just a heads up for those in Adelaide.

I just replaced my original Panasonic battery with a Century 75D23L from Rick & Pete's in Glynde for $137. By far the cheapest I could find.

They also have the NS70LX for $166.
