Do it Yourself? - give it a go

After black engine oil dropped out of my "New" 2011 T31 Series 4 - 2.5 auto and the filter was covered in mud (the dealer gave it a 'service') I will have a go changing all the transmission oils myself.

I'm not too mechanical but with the 'brains trust's help' (you guys) maybe I can do this correctly - at least i'll give it a go.

Can anybody give me some basic idea of what to change, with what and the location please?

I've tried reading various blogs but end up confused; CVT and Auto?, Transfer case, Gearbox; even was told the X may have a slippery diff requiring special oil?

There must be spec's out there but without a manual and the multitude of models it can be daunting emoticon

Hope someone can help,

Cheers

Re: Do it Yourself? - give it a go

I agree with cooch. Unless you've done some servicing, ie., had some experience at 'servicing' this is a very difficult forum within which to tell you all of the why's and wherefor's.
Start by changing the engine oil. Simple enough, just run the car up on ramps, place a bucket under the drain plug, loosen the bolt and remove. Simple. Yes, but we don't have the time, nor the space in this blog to explain that you must also remove the plastic cover under the oil filter, remove (no matter how tight) the oil filter, spread an oil film on the seal of the new filter, and screw the new filter in-place. Replace the plastic cover under the filter. Then look-up the manual and find out exactly how much oil your engine holds. Fill - do not over fill - with the correct grade (I use 10W-40 Castrol Edge) and replace the filler cap. Start the engine, run the car off the ramps onto level ground, stop the engine and check the oil level.
You see, what I'm saying is that many of us have spent several years (my years were on Datsun rally cars) learning how to do all the things which your trained mechanics do. So, in essence, the easiest way for you to learn servicing is by (a) looking up on Google, and (b) by having a go.
I mean no offence to yourself, non whatsoever, or anyone else for that matter, but I don't feel that this forum can impart enough knowledge in a few lines.

Re:

First of all, you should invest in a copy of the ESM (electronic service manual) which will make your life easier for the DIY type of maintenance and to understand where everything is located and how it can be removed.

Upgrade your membership level to Full Member to have access to a free copy of the ESM for download.

It is just not practical for any of us to guide through the servicing steps if you don't know the basics about your own vehicle and the ESM will provide this information and more.

A good place to start is your local TAFE College.

They often run courses for basic Car maintenance etc. and are not expensive.
You'll learn some really important basics and have a mechanic teaching you hands on your own car with a bit of luck.

Thanks for the sensible advice lads. Experience cannot be obtained by a few blogs granted so it's small steps.

Done the engine oil and filter following BPxtrail instructions. All good. One small step for mankind emoticon

Do we know if the diff is slippery on our 2011 T31 series 4 - 2.5 - 5 door?

Cheers and thanks again

Re:

Mmm not too sure being predominately front wheel drive.
As Jalal said, downloading the ESM would help you heaps.

Re: Do it Yourself? - give it a go

I think what your informant might be referring to about the "slippery diff" is the Electronic Controlled Coupling which transfers drive to the rear wheels. This does not need any oil and is a sealed unit at the front of the rear diff.

Hey RhK - I thought the coupling was a Wet Clutch, and shared the oil with the rear diff.

As an aside, the Xy has a Brake Limited Slip Differential system front and rear ie the diffs are standard (not limited slip/slippery!) and the Traction Control can selectively brake any wheel that has lost traction ie BLSD Front and Rear; together with the coupling great traction is assured.

A wet clutch it is, but looking at the service manual exploded view it is a separate module.

To clarify for others, this is only on the T31 and T32, Not the T30 models.
