Use of Auto gears in 4wd

I'm new to this overall and its also my first Auto vehicle but when using in Auto or even Lock mode what should I be doing with the Auto gears?

Do I simply leave it in D or does using 1 and 2 have any benefits or problems.

Are 1 and 2 useable in say Lock mode for Hill descents?

To be honest on the rare occasions I've driven an Auto in the past I have always just left it in D and never even worried about or even known for that matter what purpose 1 and 2 serve other than the assumption its for towing and staying in a set gear on hill climbs if doing so.

Re:

I had already read that thread and couldn't see anything pertaining to the specifics of what I was asking, which Isn't quite at what stage should I use the various modes but rather when using a certain mode say LOCK for example should the Transmission be just left in D or can I use the 1 and 2 gears to keep descent speed under control or for more torque on a slippery climb etc.

Does using the 1 and 2 gear of my automatic transmission have any benefit or use in the various 4wd modes of either Auto or Lock

I'm guessing Id only need them in LOCK mode because of the Low speed?

Re:

Normal street driving just leave it in D like any other automatic car. 1 and 2 helps with engine braking on steep hill inclines. AUTO mode can be used in wet weather to reduce front wheel slippage, LOCK mode is only required for off-roading and even then it is best to leave it in AUTO mode, as LOCK mode will disengage at speed above 30kms/hour.

If you car didn't come with the owners manual which explains all this, you can download it online, as it will help you understand the features of your car a bit better.

Re:

It did come with the manual yeah and I read the bits about useage of the 4wd modes and have no question regarding the useage of those, I've also learned more about them since joining and reading here but couldn't find anything pertaining to the useage of the other gears within any of the 4wd modes, but you pretty much covered it there thanks, So yeah I figure that by shifting down to say 2 on a steep decent it will help stop the Trans from shifting up to 3rd or even 4th and gaining too much speed.

The other part of the question was If I ever need Lock, which I my not given my limited experience at this stage I wouldn't be attempting anything too tricky, would 1 and 2 be useable there for lower gearing and control.

And this forum has also helped me understand the fact that LOCK is for below 30Km/h as I don't recall seeing that in my manual.

Thank You for the info

Re: Use of Auto gears in 4wd

I've been on some very challenging slopes, roads, rocks, sand etc etc and the only time I've used "Lock" is when using "Hill Descent" for crawling down very steep tracks.

I find "Auto" and "D(rive)"has never let me down. In fact I once attempted a 40 degree gnarley rocky climb and though I would be smart and put it in 1st manual and take a run up to the slope; 20 meters up the engine slowed from 4000rpm to 1800rpm and I thought I had lost it!! Tried again in Auto and Drive and car went up perfectly. Didn't need "Lock"
The 4X4i is very good when left to it's own devices.
Perhaps the only time you need "Lock" is so that Hill Descent can be engaged (very useful) or perhaps when going UP slippery, muddy or gravely slopes (I've never found it necessary).

Regarding Manual gears, the only time I ever go over to "Manual" now is for engine braking on long downhill roads at highway speeds ie move shifter to Manual and it is always in 1 gear lower than what it was in Drive. If you need more engine braking flick back to one gear lower. Any more and the engine will over rev and the CVT working Very Hard . . . so you should be using the brakes by this stage.
Remember - Brakes are MUCH cheaper to replace/service than a Transmission ($9,000).

Re:

Thanks for that both of you,

It has helped me quite a bit.

When you say Manual Gears Translucidus I'm gathering you mean you have a Tiptronic Auto box?

As mine is a 2004 Model Ive just got the old D - 2 - 1 options there,

But nonetheless both yours and Jalalski response has guided me in the right direction

Re: Use of Auto gears in 4wd

Talking about T31 with CVT Transmission.

Yours has a regular auto transmission so I'm not totally qualified to comment regarding shifting from D to 2 or 1. Having driven other cars with same sort of Auto Gearbox I must say I would select 2 or 1 in more situations than I would with a CVT that is far more intelligent and actually has a lower than 1 ratio and Higher than 6th gear ratio (more spread due to Constantly Variable Ratios being available) and will select correct ratio more correctly than an ordinary Auto Transmission such as the T30 has.

With your vehicle I would definitely select 1 for slow crawling type work or down to 2 or 1 if engine braking Really needed (eg Towing Caravan down a long hill etc) etc but I'll leave others to comment further.

Re:

All good mate, I read about CVT transmissions and had a basic idea of how they work.

Your responses have helped me.

Thanks again

Re: Use of Auto gears in 4wd

Hello Jason,

Sorry to come in a bit late on this but using 1 and 2 are very beneficial in off-roading in your T30.

Since LOCK mode automatically disengages above 40kph then using 1 for LOCK mode is recommended to keep speed down making sure you stay in LOCK mode.

Selecting 1 also helps on steep inclines in AUTO mode to make sure the transmission does not change up a gear if you lift off the accelerator, so that way you keep torque when you need it and for steep declines so that engine braking can help the brakes and aid in preventing overheating.

For most general off-roading when things are bumpy and the speed is down I usually stay in 2 for inclines or on the beach where lifting off the accelerator and having the transmission change would spell disaster with the engine dying in revs too much and then getting stuck.
