Problem with spot lights

Strange problem I found last night doing a bit of 'country' driving.

Had spotlights installed for the last few years. When i use brights, I can choose to turn them on or off, but as per regulation, they can only work when brights are on.

Last night (first time using the spotties in a while), it works the opposite.
When brights are on the spot lights don't work.
When parking lights or normal lights are on I can switch them on or off.

Nothing has changed on the car in a long time, just a 40k service last week.

Any ideas on how or why this can happen?

Thanks.

Re:

A couple of the wires behind the switch could have shorted together.
First thing I would look at.

Re: Problem with spot lights

It sounds like when someone from the service department was working on your Xtrail under the bonnet they have accidentally pulled off one of the spotlight relay wires and plugged it back onto the wrong terminal. This can happen when the wire to the spots from the Normally Open contact is plugged back onto the Normally Closed contact of the relay.

To check the relay is working properly, feel the relay with the headlights off then have someone switch them on. You should not feel it switch. Then have them switch on the high beam and you should feel the click of the relay. This will tell you the relay is working properly and one of the wires is connected wrong.
